BIRMINGHAM, Mich. – Padgett Chitty and Ashley Goh shot matching 79s on Monday to lead the Central Michigan women's golf team during the first round of the Chippewa Invitational at blustery, rainy and chilly Birmingham Country Club.
Chitty and Goh are among a group tied for eighth place in the 64-player field. The second and final round of the 36-hole event is scheduled for 10 a.m. Tuesday.
Chitty and Goh led the Chippewas to a 320 team score. CMU is in third place in the 10-team field, eight shots behind Bowling Green (312). Oakland (318) is second.
CMU's Casilda Allendesalazar shot 80 on Monday and is tied for 12th, while the Chippewas' Claudia Salvador is tied for 24th after posting an 82. CMU's Mackenzie Baustad shot 83 and is tied for 28th.
Three other Chippewas, Rachel Kauflin, Zoe Vartyan and Ashley Liles are playing in the tournament as individuals. Kauflin opened with an 86, Vartyan shot 87, and Liles carded an 88.
The high winds, temperatures in the low 40s, and sporadic rain made for difficult scoring conditions on the par-72 layout, which is playing to 5,897 yards.
Bowling Green's Emily Nystrom leads the tournament after a 2-over par 74. The Facons' Kayla Davis and Oakland's Bridget Boczar trail by one shot.
