DETROIT – A 2-2 start for the Central Michigan wrestlers at the NCAA Championships.
Matt Stencel (285 pounds) and Johnny Lovett (157) won their respective openers on Thursday at Little Caesars Arena and are scheduled to wrestle on Thursday night for a spot in the quarterfinals.
CMU's Dresden Simon (141) and Corbyn Munson (149) each dropped their respective openers and will wrestle consolation-bracket matches on Thursday night.
Stencel, who is seeded eighth, will take on ninth-seeded Lucas Davison of Northwestern on Thursday evening. Stencel (19-4) defeated Isaac Reid of Lock Haven, 8-2, on Thursday afternoon in his opening bout. It was Stencel's second consecutive win over Reid; Stencel won their first match, 4-2, in the title bout at the Mid-American Conference Championships two weeks ago.
Stencel is seeking to earn All-America honors for the third time in his outstanding CMU career.
If Stencel defeats Davison, he would likely face top-seeded Gable Steveson of Minnesota in the quarterfinal round on Friday morning. Steveson is the defending national champion and an Olympic Gold Medalist.
Lovett, making his second consecutive NCAA Championships appearance, defeated Andrew Cerniglia of Navy, 6-5, in his opening bout on Thursday afternoon.
Lovett (22-6), who is seeded 15th, is slated to wrestle No. 2-seeded Ryan Deakin of Northwestern on Thursday night for a spot in the quarterfinals. Deakin (14-0) finished third last year at the NCAA Championships and is a three-time Big Ten champion.
Simon (18-6) fell, 6-5, to Chad Red of Nebraska and is scheduled to wrestle Oklahoma's Jacob Butler (8-14) on Thursday in an elimination match. Red claimed the match with a near four-minute riding time advantage.
Simon is scheduled to wrestle on Thursday night against either Jacob Butler (8-14) of Oklahoma or Dylan Cedeno (5-8) of Virginia.
Munson (25-8) will take on P.J. Ogunsanya of Army (12-5) on Thursday night I an elimination match. Munson, the 25th seed, was pinned by eighth-seeded Max Murin of Iowa at the 4:49 mark on Thursday in their opening bout.
Thursday evening's matches are scheduled to begin at 7 p.m.
