Coons, Yturralde Lead CMU Men's Golf in Final Round in Arizona

TUCSON, Ariz. – Orlando Coons and Philippe Yturralde each shot a 1-over par 73 on Tuesday to lead the Central Michigan men's golf team during the final round of the Arizona Thunderbirds Intercollegiate at Tucson Country Club.
 
Coons closed the 54-hole event with a team-best 221 total and finished tied for 62nd in the 83-player field. Coons opened on Monday with a 75 and then completed his second round on Tuesday morning with a 73.
 
Monday's second round was suspended by darkness.
 
CMU finished in 15th place in the strong 15-team field with a 904 total.
 
Texas A&M, which is ranked 11th nationally, posted a final-round 280 to claim the team title with an 828 total. The Aggies finished three shots ahead of host Arizona, which is ranked 22nd.
 
Also for the Chippewas on Tuesday, Ethan Jaehn shot 76 and Jeffrey Andrus carded a 78. Andrus and Jaehn both shot second-round 76s and Yturralde carded a 79. Andrus finished at 226, Jaehn at 228, and Yturralde at 229.
 
The Chippewas, comprised entirely of freshmen, are in their first year of varsity competition after a 37-year hiatus. The tournament field included another top-50 team in SMU along with several teams representing Power-5 conferences, including California, Iowa State and West Virginia.
 
Zac Jones of Brigham Young closed with a 6-under 66 for a 16-under 200 total and a three-shot victory over Arizona's Cal McCoy.
 
The Chippewas are scheduled to play in the Earl Yestingmeier Match Play, hosted by Mid-American Conference foe Ball State, at Lake Jovita Golf & Country Club in Dade City, Fla., on Sunday and Monday, Feb. 5-6.
