MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. – The Central Michigan baseball team is set to open the 2023 season with a trip to Texas where the Chippewas are slated to take on Baylor and Texas Rio Grande Valley.
The Chippewas are schedule to play nine games in the Lone Star State against the Bears and Vaqueros, kicking off a 17-game nonconference slate that will also take them to California where they will take on Saint Mary's and Sacramento State.
"Each of our four pre-conference series will provide a very strong challenge which is something we embrace," said Jordan Bischel, who is entering his fifth year as the Chippewas' coach.
CMU, which is ranked 26th in Collegiate Baseball's preseason poll, is slated to open Mid-American Conference play at Ohio from March 17-19 and is slated to entertain Kent State in its home-opening weekend March 24-26.
"Anytime you are recognized in a preseason poll it is both an honor and a tip of the cap to the efforts that our student-athletes have put in during recent seasons to achieve high levels of success," said Bischel, whose Chippewas have won four Mid-American Conference championships -- two regular season and two tournament -- and earned three NCAA Tournament berths in three full seasons. "Now it is the job of this year's team to work hard to continue to build off those successes."
It will mark the first regular-season series on the new synthetic turf on Keilitz Field at Theunissen Stadium. The turf was installed over the summer.
The MAC returns to traditional three-game weekend series, with no scheduled doubleheaders, in 2023. Last season, league play consisted of four-game weekend series with a Saturday twinbill.
"By returning to three-game weekend series in MAC play, we will have a better opportunity to play several strong opponents in midweek games," said Bischel, whose team will play midweek nonconference games at home with Concordia, Hillsdale, Northwood, Madonna and Oakland, and is slated to go to Michigan, Michigan State, Oakland and Ohio State.
"All of these games provide an exciting supplement to our MAC schedule, which, as always, will be very competitive," Bischel added. "Opening the season with 20 road games also provides another unique challenge."
The MAC schedule comprises 10 series for a total of 30 games leading to the league tournament at the site of the regular season champion. The Chippewas finished 43-19 including 30-7 in MAC play a year ago, winning the league tournament at 2022 regular season champion Ball State.
In addition to Kent State, CMU is scheduled to play home MAC weekend series in 2023 with Bowling Green, Ball State, Miami (Ohio), and Eastern Michigan. The Chippewas are scheduled to visit Northern Illinois, Akron, Toledo and Western Michigan.
