MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. – Clarion scored bonus points in three of its six victories on Sunday in handing Central Michigan a 25-12 loss in a Mid-American Conference dual at McGuirk Arena.
It was the first league dual of the season for CMU (0-5). Clarion improved to 4-3, 3-1 MAC.
The Chippewas entertain two MAC foes in duals next weekend at McGuirk: Northern Illinois on Friday, Jan. 13 (7 p.m.) and SIU Edwardsville on Sunday, Jan. 15 (2 p.m.).
The Chippewas won four matches, all decisions, on Sunday against the Golden Eagles.
CMU's Vince Perez posted a 9-4 victory at 133 pounds; Corbyn Munson won 7-2 at 157; Alex Cramer took an 11-7 win at 174; and Bryan Caves posted a 3-0 win at 285.
"We've lost some confidence in ourselves, somewhat, in the start of the season," said CMU coach Tom Borrelli, whose team has wrestled the first-, ninth- and 21st-ranked teams in the nation this season. "We've got to try to figure out how to get that confidence back.
"I just want them to keep a good attitude and keep trying to improve. You never know where things are going to end up. The good thing about wrestling is we have a conference tournament, and everybody gets to go to the conference tournament. So you'll probably see some of these (opponents) later on in the year and you can gauge how much you've improved when you get to that tournament.
"We've just got to keep trying to improve and believe in ourselves."
Cramer, who is ranked eighth in the MAC, provided the biggest highlight of the meet for the Chippewas.
He trailed fifth-ranked John Worthing, 7-5, when he scored a takedown and then a four-point near-fall in the final 20 seconds to surge to an 11-7 victory.
"He showed a lot of grit, a lot of determination," Borrelli said of Cramer, who improved to 15-8. "He got in on a nice shot and finished it, took the kid to his back. That takes a lot of guts."
