The Chippewas put up new wrinkles in the lineup as injuries arise again for Sunday’s bout against the Rockets
MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. — Central Michigan Soccer dropped its first road Mid-American Conference matchup of the 2023 campaign Sunday afternoon at Toledo, 1-0.
The result came from a Rockets (4-5-2, 1-2-1 MAC) score near the end of the 54th minute of action as a cross sent away by Allison LaPoint (Royal Oak, Mich. / Shrine Catholic) was rebounded in front of the left post. Outside of the goal, the second half game flow favored the Chippewas (2-4-3, 1-3-0 MAC).
CMU put all six of its shots on-goal on the board in the latter half of play. Two came from Jocelin Zimmerer (Evergreen, Colo. / Evergreen) with one each from four different players.
"I thought, in the second half, we were a lot brighter," Head Coach Jeremy Groves said. "We created some decent chances and pinned them in for most of the second half."
While the clean sheet was preserved through the first 45 minutes, Toledo was able to offer four unanswered on-frame attempts though many were lightwork for the Chippewas' junior keeper aside from a juggling stop on the line in the 28'.
"It's not taking care of the details right now which is hurting us. We have to take the positives from the game and bounce back really quickly Thursday."
The Chippewas were without a few key players in Sunday's lineup, notably the season's leading scorer in Jenna Little (Portage, Mich. / Central). As parts to the adjustment Lauren Walker (Essexville, Mich. / Garber) shifted to centerback while Olivia Bretz (Lexington, Ky. / Lexington Catholic) and Myla Stewart (Evergreen, Colo. / Evergreen) each logged their first start of 2023.
Central Michigan Soccer returns to Mount Pleasant for its final home Thursday-night MAC contest this week to host Buffalo (5-2-4, 2-1-1 MAC), the preseason favorite to win the league in a poll of its coaches. The final two home conference matchups for the Chippewas, Akron (Oct. 15, 1:00 p.m.) and Northern Illinois (Oct. 22, 1:00 p.m.) will each be Sunday afternoon affairs.
