BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Indiana scored bonus points in three of its six victories on Saturday in handing Central Michigan a 25-15 loss in a nonconference wrestling dual at the Hoosier's Wilkinson Hall.
The Chippewas, wrestling their third ranked opponent and second out of the Big Ten, slipped to 0-4. They next wrestle at the Lehigh Sheridan Invitational on Friday, Dec. 22. The 25th-ranked Hoosiers improved to 3-0.
The Chippewas got decision victories from Sean Spidle (125 pounds), Vince Perez (133) and Johnny Lovett (157). Bryan Caves (285) won by forfeit.
CMU dropped a pair of close matches at 149 (Corbyn Munson) and at 184 (Cody Brenner) which, coupled with Indiana's bonus points, was the difference in the dual.
Munson, who is ranked 16th, dropped a 2-1 decision to 14th-ranked Graham Rooks. Brenner fell, 7-5, to Roman Rogotzke.
"I think we're getting better," CMU coach Tom Borrelli said. "We've just got to be a little bit tougher and a little bit grittier in situations. If you're going to win a dual meet, you can't give up pins. I really felt like our conditioning and things were good in this match; we just gave up a couple pins and it just didn't go our way in two matches."
Perez trailed 8-3 in the third period and then rallied for an 11-8 win over Cayden Rooks. It was Perez's first win of the season and that, coupled with Spidle's 2-1 victory, gave the Chippewas a 6-0 lead in the dual.
"He's been working hard, trying to figure some things out," Borrelli said of Perez, who scored a takedown and then a four-point near fall in the third period to turn things around. "Things weren't going well for him in the first period, but he kept wrestling and kept fighting. It's nice to see kids break through and overcome adversity."
Spidle scored a second-period escape to take a 1-0 lead in his match, and then got his second point – which proved to be the difference in the bout – when his opponent was called for stalling in the third period.
"(Spidle) was in on at least one shot that he should have finished," Borrelli said. "He deserved to win the match."
After two Indiana wins, including a pin, gave the Hoosiers a 9-6 lead, Lovett posted a 5-1 win over Nico Bolivar to re-tie the meet, 9-9.
Lovett, who is ranked 23rd, controlled the match from the outset, and, Borrelli said, could have won by a larger margin.
"Johnny probably needs to have more of a sense of urgency when he wrestles," Borrelli said. "He probably could have majored that kid and he didn't wrestle an urgent enough first period."
Indiana won the next four matches, one via major decision and another by pin, to pull away.
