CMU sits in 6th place in the 12-team event after a season-best 595 36-hole total
LAKEWOOD RANCH, Fla. – A sensational start for Casilda Allendesalazar and a solid day for the Central Michigan women's golf team in its first event of the spring season.
Allendesalazar, a sophomore, shot a program-record 4-under par 68 on Monday to lead the Chippewas during the opening round of the Bowling Green Falcon Florida Classic at Lakewood Ranch Golf and Country Club.
The final round of the 54-hole tournament is scheduled for Tuesday.
The Chippewas shot a first-round 297 total and followed with a 298 in the afternoon round for a 595 total, their best 36-hole score of the 2022-23 season. They sit in sixth place in the 12-team field, seven shots behind fifth-place Western Michigan.
Allendesalazar, a Spaniard who in a season-and-a-half in maroon and gold has established herself as one of the best in program history, bettered the former program record of 69 set in 2018 by Bria Colosky.
Allendesalazar shot a second-round 5-over 77 for a 145 total. She is tied for 12th place in the 69-player field.
"Cas's (first) round was extremely impressive," CMU coach Ryan Williams said. "It was a round that shows how good of a player she is. She was solid from start to finish; she made a few mistakes and still put that round together and that just shows how talented she is and what she's capable of and how good she can be."
Allendesalazar started hot, making four birdies in her first five holes. She turned at 3-under after bogeying the eighth hole. She then birdied Nos. 15 and 16 to get to 5-under and then overcame back-to-back bogeys with another birdie on 18.
She finished the first round with seven birdies and tied for first place.
"She picked the course apart really well," Williams said. "She used good ball striking to be in position and give herself some makeable birdie looks on that first round."
Allendesalazar's second round included one birdie against four bogeys and one double bogey. Still, she held it together and is well positioned to make a charge on Tuesday.
"I think (Monday) got a little long and little tiring in that second round," Williams said. "It's hard to keep that going. I think maybe a little bit of fatigue started to show later in the day and not as many putts were dropping for her in that second round.
"I think her maturity is starting to show itself. She's getting better and better about managing her emotions and not trying to get too much out of certain situations. I think she's a little bit more level headed out there. That's definitely helping her, and she's more confident in her talent and knows that if she has to settle for a bogey on a hole, she has the ability to make a bunch of birdies."
The other four Chippewas in the lineup improved from round 1 to round 2. Padgett Chitty shot an even-par 72 in the afternoon after opening with a 75; Ashley Goh carded a 1-over 73 after a first-round 77; Rachel Kauflin shot 76 in the afternoon after a morning 77; and Claudia Salvador shot 78 in the second round after an opening-round 81.
Chitty (147) is tied for 17th, Goh (150) is tied for 32nd, and Kauflin (153) it tied for 44th.
CMU's Zoe Vartyan, playing as an individual, shot 73-75 – 148 and is tied for 24th.
"We got off to a slow start in the morning, other than Cas," Williams said. "But I am happy with the effort. They hung in there. It was a little bit more of a depth round than the morning. It's good to see that we can struggle a little bit and still throw a decent score on the board."
Northern Illinois shot 284-280 – 564 and stands at 12-under and with a seven-shot lead over second-place Idaho.
CMU, NIU and Western Michigan of three of nine Mid-American Conference teams in the field. That gives the Chippewas a good idea of where they stack up against their league brethren.
"There are some teams here that we beat in the fall that got us today, and that leaves a little bit of a bad taste in our mouths," Williams said. "Tomorrow we'll be ready to go and maybe we can come back and clip a couple of those teams and show ourselves what we're capable of. We are getting a good look.
"Northern Illinois showed that they're a very good team and if that's a team that we want to compete with, we've got to keep getting better every day. They're very good, but we're capable of a lot more than what we did today."
Sydney Naro of NIU shot 70-68 – 138 for a one-shot lead over teammate Jasmine Ly (70-69 – 139).
