TULSA, Okla. – Two Central Michigan wrestlers remain alive after day one at the NCAA Championship at BOK Center.
CMU's Johnny Lovett (149 pounds) and Alex Cramer (174) each finished 1-1 on Thursday, while the Chippewas' Corbyn Munson (157) was eliminated from the tournament after going 0-2.
Both Lovett and Cramer are in the consolation bracket of their respective weight classes with a chance to earn All-America honors with a top-eight finish.
To accomplish that feat, both will have to win three matches on Friday.
Lovett, who is seeded 19th, is slated to face No. 4 Caleb Henson of Virginia Tech on Friday morning; Cramer, seeded 20th, is slated to square off with Troy Fisher of Northwestern, the 19th seed.
Both Lovett and Cramer dropped their respective opening matches on Thursday. Lovett fell, 18-10, to 13th-seeded Austin Gomez of Wisconsin. Cramer fell to 13th-seeded Cade DeVos of South Dakota State on a pin at 2:12.
Both then rebounded with victories on Thursday night, Lovett over No. 32 Isaiah Delgado of Utah Valley, 7-1; and Cramer, 7-5, over No. 29 Cael Valencia of Arizona State.
Munson, who was seeded 29th, opened with a 10-1 loss to fourth-seeded Jared Franek of North Dakota State and was then eliminated, 7-0, by No. 20 Cael Swenson of South Dakota State.
Lovett, who is 21-10, is wrestling in the NCAA Championships for the third consecutive season. He went 1-2 in each of the past two seasons.
Cramer (31-9), who saw his 18-match win streak end with his loss to DeVos, qualified for the NCAA Championships in 2021 but did not wrestle because of an injury. He redshirted in 2022.
Munson, who finished 25-14, also qualified for the NCAA Championships last season.
Both Lovett and Cramer are redshirt juniors, while Munson is a redshirt senior with one more year of college eligibility remaining because the COVID-shortened 2020-21 did not count against his eligibility.
