Martel Enters Record Book and Lacrosse Twins Have Fantastic Outing in 19-8 Chippewa Victory

PITTSBURGH, Pa. – Central Michigan bounced back from a tough loss to dominate the Duquesne Dukes, winning a 19-8 decision at Rooney Field. The Chippewas move their record to 2-4.
Sophomore goalie Alexa Martel made 18 saves and tied the program's game save record in the crease for CMU.
The Chippewas hit the ground running and they never looked back. Kendall Hoyt scored the first two goals of the day, and she fueled the fire for the Chippewa offense. On the day, twins Kendall and Kelly Hoyt combined for 10 of the Chippewas' 19 goals. Kelly Hoyt scored seven of those goals, which ranks tied for third in the CMU record book for most goals in a game with Anna Schoonover and current teammate, Maggie Diebold.
First year head coach, Emilia Ward believes her experienced leadership is what will be a key to CMU's success this year.
"You can't teach game minutes. You can't teach game reps," Ward said. "Today they have showed everything that they have learned not only in past years, but in this season as well. Our seniority really set the tone early on that we are going to come out and play our best, put the pedal down, finish our shots and dominate."
Graduate student Maggie Diebold and Kendall Hoyt each scored three goals for a hat trick for the Chippewas. Audrey Whiteside & Makenna Huhn had two goals apiece, while Sadie Hinkle and Celia Dow both added one.
A 12-2 scoring run by CMU broke the game open with a Huhn goal at the 11:05 mark of the second. After that goal, CMU scored three unanswered goals, allowed two then scored seven in the third and fourth quarters before the game finished at the 19-8 final.
The Chippewas shared the ball just as well as they scored it. Dow, Diebold & Whiteside each had three assists. Sandy Edwards, Kendall Hoyt, Amanda Hilderbrandt and Sadie Hinkle had one assist apiece.
Goalkeeper Martel held the crease down for the Chippewas for all 60 minutes. Martel recorded 18 saves in the outing, surpassing her previous career-high of 16. Not only did she set a new career best, but Martel also tied the program record for saves in a single game. Hope Murray set the record of 18 in the Chippewas' outing against Duquesne on March 15, 2019. The record-tying game for Martel comes shortly after she set her career best with 16 saves against a nationally-ranked Michigan team.
"Alexa is just so calm and confident in the cage," Ward said. "In the past couple of weeks, she has really elevated as a leader and in her position. She is making all the saves she needs and then some. What her level of play allows is for our defense to know they don't need to be perfect.
"Today was a great team day for us. It was a great day for some kids to get some confidence back after maybe feeling a bit shaky after facing three very solid opponents in a row. Once we found that confidence, it just kind of became contagious on the field."
The Chippewas return to Mount Pleasant to host Cincinnati on Friday, March 10 at 4 p.m. for their home opener.
Ward is excited to get her team back to Michigan as they take on a tough Bearcat squad.
"This win was huge for our confidence level," Ward said. "Cincinnati has always been a rivalry game, it has always been a tightly contested game, and we know it is going to be a 60-minute dogfight. It should be a really fun game for our home opener."
