Emily Paupore posts first win of the season with a personal record 17:08
SHEPHERD, Mich. — The Central Michigan Cross Country progam opend its 2023 season on a high note Friday as the Chippewa women placed first at the 38th Annual Jeff Drenth Memorial for the second consecutive year. Emily Paupore won the women's race and Ethan Leitner placed 14th, leading the men to a third-place finish. Both races were 5 kilometers in length.
The CMU women finished with 25 points while Eastern Michigan (50) took second. Michigan State (18) won the seven-team men's race, while EMU (37) finished second and the Chippewas (83) were third.
Paupore paved the way for the Chippewa women with a personal record 17:08 finish, one second shy of tying the school's 5-kilometer record. She finished seven seconds ahead of the second-place finisher.
"I am really happy with our team and the way they competed today," CMU Director of Cross Country/Track and Field Jenny Swieton said. "We are further ahead on both sides than we were this time last year, which is nice."
"Both groups are learning to work together in races, and that should help us to continually move up."
CMU's Natalie Newcombe finished in fifth place with a personal best time, as did Jelena Prescott, who placed seventh Anya Turner, who won the women's race in 2022, finished ninth.
In her first race as a Chippewa, Kara Terakedis ran a personal-best time and placed 10th.
Leitner, a sophomore, completed the race in 15:32, a personal record time.
Alongside Paupore, Newcombe Prescott, Terakedis and Leitner, seven other Chippewa runners achieved a new personal best: Alexis Gourrier (21st), Chesney Wilke (40th), Jolie Fisher (46th), Joey Taverna (18th), Blake Chipman (20th), Carson White (21st) and Gabe Goosen (26th).
The Chippewas will next compete in the Mel Brodt Collegiate Open at Bowling Green on Sept. 15.
