Ten Chippewa Runners Ran Personal Records, Including Paupore's School Record
SOUTH BEND, Ind. — A fierce competition, a top-20 finish and a new program record to boot.
Central Michigan Cross Country's Emily Paupore raised the bar on Friday as she set the new CMU women's five-kilometer program record at the Joe Piane Notre Dame Invite.
Paupore, a redshirt junior from Negaunee, Mich., had been in the hunt for the record since the 38th Annual Jeff Drenth Memorial on Sept. 1, where she fell just one second shy of tying the previous time of 17:07.0.
She ran the women's blue division 5k in 16:51.2, shattering the record by 18 seconds and her previous personal record by 19, for a 16th place finish among Power 5 competitors like Alabama, NC State and Florida State.
"Being in the women's blue race was a good opportunity to give it everything we have," said Director of Cross Country/Track and Field Jenny Swieton. "(Emily) went out in the lead pack, even though they're a bunch of All-Americans. She was just going to stick on them for as long as she could and I think that risk paid off."
"It's super fun to watch (the team) be willing to take risks and just go for it. Sometimes it pays off and sometimes it doesn't, but that's how breakthroughs happen. It was such a fun day."
Paupore's achievement was not the only performance to be celebrated as nine other Chippewa women ran personal record times in the Blue Division and Open Division races.
Anya Turner finished 48th, completing the Women's Blue Division race in 17:32.0 to set a new personal record of over 30 seconds. Also in the Women's Blue Division, Natalie Newcombe finished 78th, Kera Terakedis finished 94th, Maya Guikema finished 103rd and Alexis Gourrier finished 108th.
Jessie Gibbins ran a personal record time of 18:08.3 in the Women's Open Division to lead the Chippewa women in that category; Chesney Wilke placed 51st and Maija Rettelle finished 57th, both in personal best time.
Twelve CMU men ran in the 5 mile Men's Gold Division, with Blake Chipman leading the Chippewas in 77th. Gabe Goosen placed 88th, Joey Taverna finished 96th and Jason Fredricks was 109th.
"The most important thing is that they competed really well," Swieton said. "It was one of those races where we don't really know a lot of our competitors because they're outside of our region and just not our area, so we were like, lets go and see how many people we can beat with not exactly knowing what they're capable of."
"I think that's fun, and they did a really good job at that. They worked well together, competed and gave it everything they had."
With just two meets left before the Mid-American Conference Championship, the Chippewas are slated to participate in the Bradley Invitational on Friday, Oct. 13.
