Central Michigan will honor its 1974 national champion football team as its prestigious 2024 Homecoming Grand Marshals. The occasion also marks the 50th anniversary of the 1974 national championship which saw the Chippewas finish 12-1 and capture the NCAA Division II national championship. Led by fellow Hall of Fame coaches Roy Kramer (head coach) and Herb Deromedi (defensive coordinator), the title helped launch CMU Athletics as it stepped up to NCAA Division I and joined the Mid-American Conference the following year. The following link contains a detailed story on the 1974 team. Here is a list of previous Grand Marshals dating back to 1942.
Homecoming is a Central Michigan tradition that began on Nov. 22, 1924, when the Chippewas defeated Alma 13-0. Central Michigan holds a 60-34-1 all-time record in Homecoming games (note: CMU did not play Homecoming games during four years from 1943-45 due to World War II and in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic). This year's game marks the 100th anniversary of Homecoming at Central Michigan. The Chippewas have claimed three of their last four Homecoming Games. The following link contains a complete history of Homecoming at Central Michigan dating back to the first event in 1924.
Two other CMU Athletics teams will be in action in Mount Pleasant this weekend. In addition to the football game, CMU women's soccer hosts Ball State for a match on Thursday at 7 p.m. at the Soccer/Lacrosse Field and CMU field hockey will host Ball State on Friday at 3 p.m. and Michigan State on Sunday at 1 p.m. Both games will be played at Cristy Freese Field.
"Homecoming weekend is a celebratory event for our great university and athletics program," Zyzelewski Family Director of Athletics Amy Folan said. "It's an excellent time for all of our students, student-athletes, alumni, family members, and fans to come out, show their Central Michigan support, and enjoy all of the planned events this weekend."
