Cramer First, 11 Chippewa Wrestlers Place at Michigan State Open

EAST LANSING, Mich. – Alex Cramer won the 174-pound weight class in the Open Division on Saturday to lead the Central Michigan wrestling team at the Michigan State Open.
Cramer was one of 11 Chippewas to place in the event, which comprised wrestlers representing 30 colleges, universities and wrestling clubs. No team scores were kept.
The Chippewas entertain Indiana at McGuirk Arena on Friday, Nov. 15 (7 p.m.) in their first dual meet of the season.
CMU's Mason Shrader (149), Johnny Lovett (157 pounds) and Adrien Cramer (184) each placed second in the Open Division in their respective weight classes, while Sean Spidle (133) was third, Kellen Aure (141) was fourth, and Chandler Amaker (165) and Cameron Wood (197) each placed sixth.
In the Freshman/Sophomore Division, CMU's Nick Blackburn (141) placed third, Aiden Fockler (285) was fifth, and Cameron Chinavare (133) placed sixth.
Alex Cramer, the defending Mid-American Conference champion at 174, finished 4-0 on the day, capping it with a 4-1 sudden victory win over Garrett Thompson of Ohio in the title bout.
Cramer, who is ranked 21st nationally by InterMat, was dominant en route to the final, scoring a 16-6 major decision in his opening bout, and then winning by technical fall and then by fall in his semifinal.
Shrader posted a 20-4 technical fall to open the tournament, and then won a 15-11 decision and then a 7-0 decision to reach the final, where he lost on a 15-0 technical fall to Jaxon Joy of the Spartan Combat RTC.
Lovett, who is ranked 16th nationally, dropped a 6-4 decision to Ohio's Peyten Keller in the championship match at 157. Keller, an All-American in 2024, is ranked third nationally.
Lovett opened with a 10-6 victory and then scored a 15-6 major-decision victory to reach the semifinals, where he posted a 4-2 victory.
Adrien Cramer reached the final at 184 with an 8-2 victory and a win by medical forfeit. He fell, 5-3, to Oklahoma State's Jersey Robb in the title bout.
Spidle won two matches, his opener and his semifinal bout, in sudden victory. He dropped a major decision in his second-round bout and posted an 8-0 major-decision win over Lucian Brink of Northern Illinois in the third-place match.
Aure posted a pair of 4-1 victories, a major-decision win, and a victory by technical fall en route to the third-place match, where he dropped a 4-2 decision to Joey Butler of Indiana. Earlier in the tournament, Butler handed Aure a 6-3 loss, dropping Aure into the consolation bracket.
Amaker was pinned by 27th-ranked Bryce Hepner of Ohio State in his opening bout, and then won four consecutive matches in the consolation bracket – one by major decision, another on a technical fall – to make his way into the place matches. Having wrestled the maximum six matches on the day, Amaker bowed out of the fifth-place match to finish sixth.
Wood went 3-1 in the four matches he wrestled on the day, posting one victory by major decision and another by technical fall. He lost his final two bouts, including the fifth place match, by medical forfeit.
Blackburn finished 5-1 on the day, posting a 7-2 win over Lucan O'Brien in the third place match.
Fockler won his fifth place match by medical forfeit over Aden Roe of Edinboro.
Chinavare dropped a 9-7 decision to Nate Knowlton of Findlay in his fifth place match.
