The Chippewas drop Friday afternoon’s contest, 16-12; DePrado scores four times, Martel posts 13 saves
MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. — Central Michigan Lacrosse returned to the CMU Lacrosse Complex Wednesday to host a hot Lindenwood squad for a back-and-forth battle that fell, 16-12, in favor of the now 8-1 Lions.
The Chippewas saw junior goalie Alexa Martel (Rochester, N.Y. / Greece Olympia) become just the second to eclipse 300 career saves in the Maroon & Gold with her fifth save of the game, with 3:43 to go in the first half in a 7-7 deadlock. Martel went on to post 13 for the contest.
Skye DePrado (Pittsburgh, Pa. / North Allegheny) expanded her team lead with four goals, up to 17 for the season, ahead of Sadie Hinkle's (Medina, Ohio / Medina) 10, two of which were marked Friday.
Sandy Edwards (Stuart, Fla. / Jensen Beach) was strong on both ends of the field, tying for the game's high of three caused turnovers while striking for a pair of goals.
Central Michigan led the Lions into 20 turnovers on the day, 13 of them attributed to Chippewa defenders, both season-best marks. Five players marked multiple caused turnovers, led by Edwards and freshman defender Ava Regitz (Marrieta, Ga. / Blessed Trinity) with three apiece. Regitz also led the cleanup effort with five ground balls, followed by Martel and Avery Wagnon (Humble, Texas / Atascocita) with four each.
The Chippewas drew first blood in the contest on the first Hinkle score, then notched four straight to end the first quarter up, 5-2. Amanda Hilderbrandt (Rochester, N.Y. / Hilton) assisted goals two and three in the 4-0 run, then scored her second goal of the season to reach a 6-4 lead early in the second.
Lindenwood's dominance on the draw was the key to Friday's game, as Ryleigh Cavanaugh accounted for 19 of the Lions' 25 draw controls, to just five for the Chippewas. The impressive effort led to a gradual breakaway for Lindenwood in the second half as CMU's last one-possession deficit came on an Edwards free position goal midway through the third quarter, 9-8 Lindenwood.
Central Michigan Lacrosse remains in Mount Pleasant Sunday to host Detroit Mercy to open the 2024 Mid-American Conference slate. First draw is set for Noon ET. The Chippewas will head back out on the road for Marquette (March 22), Youngstown State (March 31) and Pittsburgh (April 2) before their next appearance at the CMU Lacrosse Complex.
