Chippewas complete second spring scrimmage in full pads under sunny skies at Kramer/Deromedi Field at Kelly/Shorts Stadium.
MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich.—The Central Michigan Football program completed its second of two scrimmages Saturday afternoon at Kramer/Deromedi Field at Kelly/Shorts Stadium. The Chippewas wore full pads in the two-hour scrimmage under windy and sunny skies.
Central Michigan has one more week of spring practice left. The Chippewas have scheduled several practice days to make up for two days that they couldn't practice.
CMU worked on a variety of in-game situations including goal line sets, down and distance, yard line and field goal, punt, punt return, kickoff, and kickoff return. The Chippewas also simulated a real game with in-game flow on both offense and defense. The defense was able to tackle, except the quarterbacks. A full complement of officials were present to make calls.
Five offensive touchdowns were scored on the day. In the day's first offensive series, quarterback Joe Labas drove the offense down the field and found Javorian Wimberly for a 14-yard touchdown pass. Quarterback Bert Emanuel, Jr., connected on a 39-yard touchdown pass to Nahree Biggins, who caught a screen and raced through the defense for six points. Running back B.J. Harris scored on a 39-yard counter run up the middle of the field. Labas also hooked up for touchdown passes to wide receiver Langston Lewis on a 6-yard score and running back Brock Townsend on a 25-yard TD.
Other offensive highlights included a 25-yard pass from Labas to wide receiver Jordyn Williams, a 35, 16, and 17-yard runs by Emanuel, two additional screens from Labas to Biggins for 35 and 20 yards respectively, a 12-yard scramble by quarterback Tyler Jefferson, a 21-yard pass to Solomon Davis from Labas, an 18-yard pass from Labas to Chris Parker, a 23-yard pass from Jefferson to Parker, and a 27-yard pass from Labas to Lewis.
The defense came up with all kinds of highlights on the day and a variety of turnovers. Linebacker Lawai'a Brown recovered a fumble and linebacker Fernando Sanchez III tipped a pass and intercepted it for the two turnovers on the day. Sanchez had a monster day with 1.0 sack, 1.0 tackle behind the line, and an interception, along with numerous other pressures and near-misses. The defensive line also stepped up as solo sacks were registered by Pius Odjugo (two), Oumar Conde, Jonah Pace, and Jonathan Decker, and a half-sack by Jemeil Jackson, and tackles behind the line by Jason Williams (1.5), Pace (0.5), Odjugo, and Conde. Defensive backs Da'Raun McKinney, Caleb Spann, and Jaion Jackson (0.5) also notched sacks, Jaree Turner totaled a TBL and a pass breakup, and Kyle Krebs added a pass breakup.
Even with heavy wind on the field, special teams highlights were provided by placekicker Tristan Mattson, who converted 2-3 field goals on the day including distances of 35 and 36 yards, while placekicker Cade Graham added a 44-yarder, and punter Ryan Peluso nailed a 31-yarder. Both Mattson and Graham handled kickoffs. Punter David Chapeau continued to boom long punts and placed a beauty inside the 5-yard line.
