Detroit Mercy scores with 6 seconds remaining, ending CMU's dream of a third straight MAC Tournament crown
MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. – The Central Michigan lacrosse team overcame an early 6-1 deficit and tied the game three times in the second half on Thursday, only to fall to Detroit Mercy, 11-10, in a Mid-American Conference Tournament semifinal at the CMU Lacrosse/Soccer Stadium.
The loss ended the Chippewas' season at 5-13 and their bid for a third consecutive MAC Tournament title and third straight NCAA Tournament bid.
CMU was the MAC regular season champion and, as such, served as the tournament hosted. The Titans (6-11) came in as the No. 4 seed.
Eastern Michigan, the No. 2 seed, and third-seeded Robert Morris were set to meet in the second semifinal later on Thursday. The title game is scheduled for noon on Saturday.
Cat Kopchia, the MAC Offensive Player of the Year, scored with 6 seconds remaining to give the Titans the win.
The Chippewas trailed, 6-1, late in the first quarter, but then scored five straight goals to forge a 6-6 tie with under 10 minutes to play. The game would be tied twice more – that last at 10-10 on Skye DePrado goal with 4:27 to play – before Kopchia's game winner.
DePrado scored four goals and Celia Dow and Sandy Edwards had two each to lead the Chippewas.
CMU goalkeeper Alexa Martel made eight saves.
The Chippewas outshot the Titans, 40-26.
