Chippewas run through scrimmage in full pads under partly sunny skies and heavy wind at Kramer/Deromedi Field at Kelly/Shorts Stadium.
MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich.—The Central Michigan Football program concluded its first of two preseason scrimmages on Saturday afternoon at Kramer/Deromedi Field at Kelly/Shorts Stadium. The Chippewas wore full pads in the two-hour scrimmage under partly sunny and windy weather conditions.
Central Michigan's second spring scrimmage is scheduled for next Saturday, August 17 at 1:30 p.m. at Kramer/Deromedi Field at Kelly/Shorts Stadium.
CMU worked on a variety of in-game situations including goal line sets, down and distance, yard line and field goal, punt, punt return, kickoff, and kickoff return. The Chippewas also simulated a real game with in-game flow on both offense and defense. The defense was able to tackle, except the quarterbacks. A full complement of officials were present to make calls.
It was an offense-heavy scrimmage early in the session as the Chippewa offense scored touchdowns on two of its first three possessions. Myles Bailey scored on a 6-yard run in the first series that was set up by a spectacular 53-yard run by Marion Lukes who wove in and out of the defense. Bailey then scored on a 38-yard run in the scrimmage's third series, which saw him go left through the line, change direction, then race into the end zone.
Quarterback Joe Labas connected with Stephan Bracey, Jr. for touchdown passes of 40 and 10 yards. On the 40-yarder, Bracey caught the ball, broke a tackle, juked another defender and jetted into the end zone. Labas also hit Solomon Davis for a 51-yard pass. Running back Brock Townsend scored touchdowns on runs of 3 and 2 yards, and also rushed for long gains of 34 and 18 yards.
Quarterback Bert Emanuel, Jr. ran for a long gain of 36 yards, hit Jordyn Williams on a 28-yard pass play and found Bailey for a 26-yard gain. Quarterback Jadyn Glasser connected with Travis Ambrose for a 33-yard pass, quarterback Tyler Jefferson went on several long scrambles and pass plays, and quarterback Logan Borodychuk found Ambrose for a 16-yard gain at the goal line. Other highlights were provided by running back B.J. Harris, who ran for a 33-yard gain, and running back Nahree Biggins, who broke free for a 20-yard run.
In the second half of the scrimmage, the defense stepped up and started making the majority of the big plays. Defensive highlights included an interception and a sack by linebacker Dakota Cochran, three pass breakups by linebacker Lawai'a Brown, a sack and tackle for loss by linebacker Justin Whiteside, two pass breakups by defensive back Aakeem Snell, a sack and pass breakup by linebacker Xavier White, and two sacks in the same series by defensive lineman Michael Heldman. Cochran intercepted his pass while running to cover a receiver with the ball thrown over his head and his sack came on a play where he shot the gap.
Defensive back Caleb Spann forced a fumble with a heavy hit which was recovered by the defense, defensive back Marcus Badgett registered a sack, and defensive backs Donte Kent, Trey Liebhardt, and Bryce Rowe all had pass breakups. Sacks were also totaled by defensive linemen Kade Kostus and Jaden Davis, while Mark-Allen Gay, Jonah Pace, and Daniel Bennett registered solo tackles for loss, and Cochran/Jordan Kwiatkowski, Kwiatkowsk/Elijah Rikard, and Victor Earl/Adam Kaminski/Keshawn Hayden all teamed on tackles for losses.
Special Teams highlights were provided by placekickers Tristan Mattson and Cade Graham and punters David Chapeau and Ryan Peluso, who all had to deal with heavy wind gusts. Mattson hit field goals of 29, 37, and 32 yards, and Graham converted field goals of 20, 35, and 39 yards. Chapeau had several punts that traveled 40-plus yards.
