Chippewas work through second spirited preseason scrimmage in full pads at Kramer/Deromedi Field at Kelly/Shorts Stadium.
MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich.—The Central Michigan Football program concluded its second of two preseason scrimmages in front of a group of donors, CMU supporters and other family members Saturday at Kramer/Deromedi Field at Kelly/Shorts Stadium. The Chippewas wore full pads in the two-hour scrimmage while competing under partly cloudy skies and sporadic rain showers.
CMU worked on a variety of in-game situations including goal line sets, down and distance, yard line and field goal, punt, punt return, kickoff, and kickoff return. The Chippewas also simulated a real game with in-game flow on both offense and defense. The defense was able to tackle, except the quarterbacks. A full complement of officials were present to make calls.
Central Michigan's offense scored seven touchdowns and was led by quarterbacks Joe Labas, Tyler Jefferson, and Jadyn Glasser, running backs B.J. Harris and Nahree Biggins (two touchdowns), and wide receiver Jordyn Williams, who finished with two touchdown grabs.
The quarterbacks all enjoyed successful moments. Labas found Alec Palella wide open in the end zone for a 16-yard touchdown to start the scoring on the day's first drive and later hit Evan Boyd for a 3-yard touchdown pass.
Glasser teamed with Nasir Williams for a 24-yard pass, scrambled, emerged from the pile, and found Biggins for a 30-yard pass play, and then hit Jason Philpot-Dixon for a 6-yard touchdown pass.
Jefferson and Jordyn Williams teamed up for two touchdown receptions. First, he spotted a wide open Jordyn Williams for a 16-yard touchdown pass. Then later in the scrimmage, he hit Jordyn Williams again on a slant down the middle for a spectacular 75-yard touchdown pass. The ball arrived perfectly as Williams raced past his defender, made the reception in stride, avoided the referee, and rambled into the end zone.
Harris and Biggins keyed the rushing attack and received the bulk of the carries for the offense. Harris scored on an entertaining 37-yard run in which he went up the middle of the defense, juked two defenders and ended up in the end zone. Biggins scored when he went left, broke free and outraced everyone to the goal line for an impressive 53-yard touchdown run. In goal line drills, Biggins dove into the end zone for another score.
Central Michigan's defense also made numerous plays and registered many stops. Oumar Conde provided the most memorable highlight as he burst through the line and made a strong tackle in the end zone for a safety. That play set off a glorious celebration on the defensive sideline. Jaree Turner-Kinsler and Xavier White both intercepted passes. Turner-Kinsler stepped in front of a pass, bobbled it then controlled it and rambled for a 35-yard return after CMU's defensive line, led by Michael Heldman applied heavy pressure. White also stepped in front of a pass to end an offensive drive.
Sacks were registered by Keshawn Hayden, Jonah Pace/Lawai'a Brown, Kade Kostus, Pius Odjugo, and Jaden Davis. Tackles for loss were totaled by Ed Conoran, Daniel Bennett/Odjugo, Lawai'a Brown, Pace/Justin Whiteside, Jeremiah Waldrond/Victor Earl, Conde, Marcus Badgett, White, and Waldron/Mckeegan Ferguson.
Four players broke up passes including Jeremiah Alston-Jackson, Jaion Jackson, Brenden Deasfernandes, and Keyton Jones.
Chippewas special teams play was highlighted by Tristan Mattson, who converted field goals of 59 and 40 yards, Cade Graham, who hit field goals of 46 and 35 yards, David Chapeau, who placed a punt inside the 5-yard line along with several other long punts, and Ryan Peluso, who also launched several long punts.
Twelve days remain before Central Michigan opens its 2024 football season at home on Thursday, August 29 at 7 p.m. vs. Central Connecticut State at Kramer/Deromedi Field at Kelly/Shorts Stadium.
