Three Chippewas in the Top 10 After Day 1 at A-Ga-Ming

CMU in third place, six shots back heading into Monday's final round
KEWADIN, Mich. – Three Chippewas in the top 10, and Central Michigan is well within striking distance.
A good start for a relatively young team in its season-opening tournament.
CMU's Ella Zanatta is in fourth place, Hailey Katona is tied for fifth, and Rachel Niskanen is among a group in 10th after the first two rounds of the A-Ga-Ming Invitational on the Sundance Course at A-Ga-Ming Golf Resort.
The third and final round is scheduled for Monday (9 a.m.).
Zanatta, a freshman playing in her first collegiate tournament, opened with a 1-over 73 on Sunday and followed with a 6-over 78. Her 151 total has her two shots behind the leader, Caroline McConnell of Bradley.
Zanatta led the Chippewas to a first-round 305 total. The Chippewas posted a 311 team score in the second round for a 616 total.
They trail first-place Bowling Green (301-309 – 610) by six shots and are one behind second-place Bradley (306-309 – 615) in the 14-team field.
Katona, a grad transfer from Mercer playing in her first event as a Chippewa, shot back-to-back 76s for a 152 total. Niskanen, a sophomore, shot 76-77 – 153.
Katona trails the leader by just three shots and Niskanen is four back.
CMU' Lauren Davis posted a pair of 8-over 80s and is tied for 31st in the 84-player field. Also for the Chippewas, Lexi Schulman shot 85-86 – 171, Brooke Morris shot 85-81 – 166, and Alexis McMurray shot 93-81 – 174.
Davis and Morris are both freshmen playing in their first collegiate tournament. Schulman is a sophomore, McMurray a junior. Morris and McMurray are playing as individuals.
