
Alex Cramer, Lovett, Austin Go Unbeaten in Chippewa Challenge

CMU finished 0-3 in fourth annual event; return to MAC competition next weekend at Ohio
WASHINGTON, D.C. -- The Central Michigan wrestling team finished 0-3 on Sunday in the fourth annual Chippewa Challenge at Bender Arena on the campus of American University.

CMU opened with a 22-16 loss to Campbell; then fell to host American, 21-13; and closed with a 21-20 loss to Cal State Bakersfield.

The Chippewas (4-8) return to Mid-American Conference competition on Sunday, Feb. 2 with a dual meet at Ohio. CMU is 2-0 in MAC duals.

Alex Cramer (174 pounds) and Johnny Lovett (157) both went 3-0 on Sunday to lead the Chippewas, while Andrew Austin (149/141) finished 2-0.

Cramer ran his win streak to nine matches, while Lovett has won his last eight.
Â
Cramer, who is ranked ninth nationally by InterMat and 10th by FloWrestling, was dominant in posting a technical fall and two major decision victories.
Â
His 15-0 tech fall came against Cal State Bakersfield, while he posted a 16-5 major decision win against Campbell and a 12-1 major against American.

Lovett, who is ranked 17th and 20th, won by technical fall against Cal State Bakersfield and by decision in the duals with Campbell and with American.

Austin stepped into the lineup in place of Mason Shrader at 149 when Shrader was injured and medical forfeited in the Chippewas' first dual of the day, against Campbell.

Austin posted a decision victory at 149 against American and then won by major decision at 141 against Cal State Bakersfield.

The Chippewas also got wins against Campbell from Adrien Cramer (184) and Bryan Caves (285). Caves' victory came on a first-period pin.

CMU's Luke Cochran (197) won by decision against American and Vince Perez (133) won by decision against Cal State Bakersfield.

The CMU-Bakersfield dual came down to the final bout. CMU led, 20-17, when Bakersfield's Jake Andrews, who is ranked 25th by FloWrestling, took 4-1 sudden victory win over Caves to tie the dual, 20-20.

The Roadrunners won the dual on the first tie-breaker, matches won. Bakersfield won six matches to the Chippewas' four.
