Zanatta ninth, Niskanen T12 heading into Tuesday's final round
PORTAGE, Mich. – Ella Zanatta opened with a 5-over par 77 and followed with a 4-over 76 for a 9-over 153 total to lead the Central Michigan women's golf team on Monday in the WMU Bronco Fall Classic at The Moors Golf Club.
Zanatta is in ninth place in the 41-player field. She trails the leader, Western Michigan's Megha Vallabhaneni (75-70 -- 145), by eight shots.
The Chippewas opened with a 309 team score and then posted a second-round 308 for a 36-hole 617 total. They are in fourth place in the seven-team field, 14 shots behind the host Broncos (301-302 – 603) and one behind third-place Loyola-Chicago (309-307 – 616).
The final round of the 54-hole, stroke-play event is scheduled for 9 a.m. Tuesday.
Zanatta, a sophomore, made five birdies on the day, tying for the second most in the field. She averaged a tournament-best 4.75 on The Moors' four par 5s.
CMU's Rachel Niskanen opened with a 2-over 74 and then shot 9-over 81 for a 155 total. She is among a group tied for 12th.
Also for the Chippewas on Monday, Lauren Davis shot 78-78 – 156, Alexis McMurray shot 80-78 – 158, and Brooke Morris shot 85-76 – 161.
Davis is among a group tied for 16th, McMurray is tied for 22nd, and Morris is in 28th place.
McMurray played the course's par 3s in a combined 1-under on the day, the lone player in the field in red figures on the par 3s. Niskanen made four birdies on the day, tying for seventh in the field in that category.
Three other Chippewas, Zoe Dull, Lexi Schulman and Evanka Shah, are playing in the tournament as individuals.
Dull shot 81-81 – 162, Schulman shot 83-83 – 166, and Shah shot 89-85 – 174. Dull is tied for 29th, Schulman is in 33rd.
