Junior Lexi Schulman leads Chippewas in final round with 4-over 74
AKRON, Ohio – Central Michigan's Zoe Dull closed with a. 5-over par 75 on Tuesday to finish in a tie for 16th place in the Mid-American Conference Women's Golf Championships at Firestone Country Club.
Dull led the Chippewas to an eighth-place finish in the 10-team field. CMU posted a 306 team score on Tuesday for a 54-hole 905 total.
Dull, a freshman, finished at 9-over par 219. She shot back-to-back 2-over par 72s in the first two rounds, and she finished the 54-hole event with 37 pars, tied for the fifth most in the 50-player field.
"Zoe played really solid all week," CMU coach Ryan Williams said. "Definitely proud of her performance. She played steady, simple golf and it showed up in a big way for us. She was right there, maybe if she makes a few more putts she could have shot a couple of better rounds, but all in all, it was just a really solid performance from her."
The Chippewas' Lexi Schulman shot a 4-over 74 on Tuesday to finish with at 14-over 224 and a T26 finish; Ella Zanatta posted a 5-over 75 to finish at 16-over 226 and tied for 30th; and Rachel Niskanen finished T43 after a final-round and a 16-over 236 finish.
Schulman, a junior, was steady throughout all 54 holes of the tournament, opening with a 4-over 74 and then posting a 6-over 76. She never made worse than a bogey over the entire 54-hole event.
"I felt like Lexi played really well all three days," Williams said. "Pretty similar to Zoe, she just kind of plugging away, keeping it simple, and doing what she needed to do and it helped the team in a big way."
CMU's Brooke Morris, who stood at 18-over entering the final round, was disqualified for signing an incorrect scorecard.
The Chippewas opened the final round in sixth place, one shot ahead of the seventh-place team, Western Michigan.
"It was kind of right where we expected to be," Williams said. "We were hoping for a little better and to beat a couple more teams, but we struggled a little bit today and that was a little bit disappointing.
"It was good experience for us. It's a tough golf course, it's demanding, and everyone really grinded very hard. You couldn't ask for any more out of the team; they did everything they possibly could. Sometimes you just don't get the bounces you need to have a bit more success."
Veronika Kedronova, who is ranked 24th nationally, posted a final-round 3-under 67 to finish at 7-under 203 to claim medalist honors. She won by five shots over teammate Gracie Larsen, who also closed with a 3-under 67.
Kedronova and Larsen led the Golden Flashes to a final round 275 team score and an 831 total. They won their 27th consecutive MAC team title.
