Chippewas finish 9-10 in duals, look to March 7-8 Mid-American Conference Championships
ANN ARBOR – Michigan dominated the upper weights on Sunday in handing Central Michigan a 31-11 loss at Cliff Keen Arena in the Chippewas' final dual meet of the season.
The Chippewas finished 9-10 and next will look to defend their title at the Mid-American Conference Championships March 7-8 at Rider in Trenton, N.J. The 19th-ranked Wolverines are 7-5.
The Chippewas won three of the first five matches on Sunday in building an 11-8 lead at intermission.
Michigan captured the final five matches, one by fall, two by technical fall and one by major decision.
The Chippewa wins came from Sean Spidle (133 pounds), Mason Shrader (149) and Johnny Lovett (157).
Lovett, who is ranked 17th nationally by FloWrestling, won on a 9-3 decision, improving to 27-4 on the season and moving into fifth place on CMU's all-time victories list with the 129th of his career. Lovett has won 18 of his last 19 matches.
Spidle, who is ranked 24th, won on a 15-0 technical fall to continue his late-season dominance. The win was his 12th straight and his 16th in his last 18. He has outscored his opponents, 100-14, during his 12-match win streak as he posted his sixth consecutive shutout in improving to 19-8. He has scored bonus points in six of his last 10 matches.
The 30th-ranked Shrader (21-7) scored a 4-2 win over 27th-ranked Dylan Gilcher. It was Shrader's sixth consecutive win and he has won nine of his last 10.
