Katona Leads Women's Golf on Opening Day at Texas State Invitational

Chippewas 8th in 10-team field heading into Tuesday's final round
BLANCO, Texas – Hailey Katona shot 78-75 – 153 to lead the Central Michigan women's golf team on Monday during the first two rounds of the Texas State Invitational at Vaaler Creek Golf Club.
Katona is tied for 14th in the 63-player field.
The third and final round is scheduled for Tuesday with a 9:15 a.m. shotgun start. The tournament is CMU's first of the spring portion of its 2024-25 season.
Katona led the Chippewas to a 318 team score in Monday's opening round. The Chippewas posted a 312 team total in Monday's second round and stand at 630 and in eighth place in the 10-team field.
CMU trails seventh-place Sacred Heart (626) by four shots.
Also for the Chippewas on Monday, Rachel Niskanen shot 79-78 – 157, Ella Zanatta shot 80-78 – 158, Brooke Morris shot 81-81 – 162, and Lexi Schulman shot 84-82 – 166. CMU's Lauren Davis, playing as an individual, shot 85-79 – 164.
Niskanen is tied for 26th, Zanatta is tied for 33rd, Morris is tied for 43rd, Davis is tied for 46th, and Schulman is tied for 52nd.
Host Texas State and Houston Christian both posted a 605 team total on Monday to share first place. They lead third-place Drake (613) by seven shots.
Summer Lee of Oklahoma State shot 71-69 – 140 and stands in first place with a three-shot lead over Yvonne Chamness of Texas State (73-70 – 143). Lee is playing as an individual.
