PHILADELPHIA – The brackets are set for the NCAA Wrestling Championships.
Alex Cramer, at No. 10 at 174 pounds, is the highest seed of the five Chippewas in the 333-wrestler field for the tournament, which begins on Thursday, March 20, at Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia.
CMU's Johnny Lovett (157) is seed 15th, Sean Spidle (133) is 23rd, Mason Shrader (149) is 24th, and Chandler Amaker (165) is 33rd. The Chippewas' Luke Cochran, a redshirt freshman, is the alternate at 197 pounds.
Each of the 10 weight classes comprises 33 wrestlers. The final two seeded wrestlers in each class, Nos. 32 and 33, square off in the opening bouts with the winner facing the top seed in that particular weight class.
The top eight finishers in each weight class earn All-America honors.
• Cramer, a graduate student who has qualified for the NCAA Championships for the fourth time in his career, will open against 23rd-seeded MJ Gaitan of Iowa State. The winner will take on either No. 7 Danny Wask of Navy or No. 26 Brody Baumann of Purdue.
• Lovett, a graduate student who will wrestle in the tournament for the fifth consecutive year, will face 18th-seeded Jacori Teemer or Iowa in the opening round. The winner will take on either No. 2 Meyer Shapiro of Cornell or No. 31 Noah Castillo of Chattanooga.
Spidle, Shrader and Amaker are wrestling in the NCAA Championships for the first time.
• Spidle, a redshirt junior, is set to open against 10-seeded Dylan Shawver of Rutgers with the winner facing either No. 7 Nic Bouzakis of Ohio State or No. 26 Kai Orine of North Carolina State.
• Shrader is scheduled to open against ninth-seeded Cross Wasilewski of Penn with the winner then facing either No. 25 Malyke Hines of Lehigh or No. 8 Jordan Williams of Little Rock.
• Amaker is set to face No. 32 Jared Keslar of Pitt in the pigtail match at 165 with the winner facing top-seeded Mitchell Mesenbrink of Penn State, the defending runner-up.
