Jozy Allen, Alexa Martel earned first-team laurels as CMU defense stands tall in conference recognition
CLEVELAND — Senior Jozy Allen (Cincinnati, Ohio / Sycamore) was named the Mid-American Conference Defensive Player of the Year in the league's announcement of postseason awards Wednesday—the first in program history to earn the distinction—with five other members of Central Michigan Lacrosse earning league honors.
Â
Allen led the MAC with 104 draw controls this season—the first player in program history to reach triple digits—and was second in the conference with 27 caused turnovers, 34th in NCAA I. She is one of only two players in NCAA I to rank in the top 40 in both draw controls and caused turnovers on a per-game basis, and one of only three defenders to rank in the top 150. Her productive senior season skyrocketed her career totals to finish second in the CMU record book in both areas.
Â
The now three-time All-MAC honoree collected four double-digit games in draw controls in 2025, setting the program record with 16 at Robert Morris, logging the Colonial's largest negative margin in a game ever in MAC play. Prior to this season, CMU had only had six double-digit performances with no player repeating the feat more than once.
Â
The All-MAC First Team featured senior goalkeeper Alexa Martel (Rochester, N.Y. / Greece Olympia) alongside Allen. The duo headed a conference-leading CMU defense that held all MAC competitors below their team scoring averages in league play, including three teams three goals or more below average.
Â
Martel had already rewritten much of the goalie records for CMU lacrosse prior to her senior season—total saves for a season, multiple top ten single-game save performances, season and career save percentage—needing just the first 15 minutes of 2025 to overtake the career saves record as well.
Â
Among the nation's best throughout the season, Martel led NCAA I with 12 saves per game this season and finished top five with a .505 save percentage, including a .559 mark in league games. Martel graduates with 586 saves to her credit—163 more than second in CMU history—and stands fourth among active NCAA I goalies. She also moves on as a three-time All-MAC recipient, the MAC recordholder with nine Player of the Week selections and the Goalkeeper of the Year honor in 2024.
Â
Senior attacker Skye DePrado (Pittsburgh, Pa. / North Allegheny) and sophomore defender Ava Regitz (Marietta, Ga. / Blessed Trinity) landed on the league's second team.
Â
DePrado took control of the CMU attack after getting a late start to the season due to injury. She recorded six hat tricks on the season, scoring on nearly 80 percent of on-target shots, 50 percent of all shots taken. DePrado produced in isolation, scoring nine of her 15 goals against conference opponents unassisted. DePrado finished with the 10th-most goals scored per game in a season in program history, graduates with 91 goals—seventh all-time at CMU.
Â
Another terrific on-ball defender, Regitz tied Allen's season mark with 27 caused turnovers—second in CMU history—aiding the strong CMU defense. In league play, Regitz forced the most turnovers of any MAC player (18) and collected the second-most ground balls (20) of any MAC field player. The sophomore already charts eighth in career caused turnovers (43) and 20th in ground balls (51).
Â
Caye Kalbacher (Austin, Texas / Stephen F. Austin) and Teagan Braman (Haddonfield, N.J. / Memorial) round out the 2025 Chippewa honorees as members of the MAC All-Freshman squad. Both players were day-one starters were CMU this season—Braman was another key component on defense while Kalbacher was CMU's second-highest scoring midfielder.
