Chippewas Finish Weekend in Columbus; Paupore, Newcombe to Compete Sunday

Track and Field wraps up Jesse Owens Classic amid rainy weather conditions
COLUMBUS, Ohio — Central Michigan Track and Field pushed through rainy conditions on Saturday to wrap up the Jesse Owens Classic, which was cut short on Friday due to severe weather.
CMU competed in the 4x100, 100m, 400m, 800m, 3000S, long jump, hammer throw, discus, pole vault and shot put, compiling six podium finishes and two personal records on the second and final day of competition.
The Chippewa relay squad of Kaitlynn Rush, Dior Newson, Mireya Benjamin and Sky Austin ran the 4x400, finishing 4th in 47.43. Newson, Benjamin and Austin additionally ran the 100m, finishing 3rd, 5th and 7th, respectively.
Robyn Watts placed 4th in the 400m with a time of 59.80, the lone CMU sprinter in the event.
Chesney Wilke led CMU in the 800m, finishing 8th in 2:13.03. She was joined by Lois Creasey (16th), Emma Janesak (19th), Jessie Gibbins (24th) and Olivia East (35th). Janesak ran a personal-best.
Emma Netzel and Nikki Carothers rounded out the running events with the 3000m steeplechase. Netzel ran a personal-best 11:14.64 to finish 10th while Carothers placed 14th.
Gracie Merrick competed in the hammer throw and discus on Saturday, finishing 28th in the discus and 31st in the hammer throw.
Ereka Risner led in the shot put, finishing 11th with a mark of 12.39m. Emily McLean finished 15th, Amyah Chosa 16th.
Long jumper Hailey Hill finished 9th of 23 competitors with a mark of 5.30m and Riley Neilsen finished 23rd in pole vault.
While the Chippewa squad heads home to Mount Pleasant, Emily Paupore and Natalie Newcombe are slated to compete in the Duke Twilight meet on Sunday, racing in the 5000m. The race is slated for 9:15 p.m.
CMU will compete again as a squad on May 9 at the Len Paddock Invitational, hosted by the University of Michigan.
