CMU returns to the mat on Saturday (10 a.m.) to take on Harvard and then No. 8 South Dakota State
CEDAR FALLS, Iowa – The Central Michigan wrestling team split its two meets on Friday on the opening day of the National Wrestling Coaches Association National Duals at the UNI Dome on the campus of the University of Northern Iowa.
The Chippewas (4-2) are set to wrestle three duals on Saturday. They open with Harvard (0-2) at 10 a.m. and then take on No. 8 South Dakota State (6-0) at noon. They will then wrestle a place dual meet against an opponent to be determined later on Saturday.
CMU opened with a 33-6 victory over Campbell on Friday then fell to Northern Illinois, 20-14. The CMU-NIU meet does not count in the Mid-American Conference standings. The teams are scheduled to meet in a dual on Friday, Jan. 16 in DeKalb, Ill. in a dual that will count in the league standings.
The Chippewas won eight of 10 matches with Campbell (2-6) and then took four of 10 against the Huskies (3-3).
CMU got bonus-point victories against Campbell from Jimmy Nugent (149 pounds), Brayden Gautreau (174), Wyatt Ferguson (184) and Luke Cochran (197) and decision wins from Andrew Austin (133), Nick Blackburn (141) and Bryan Caves (285).
CMU's Chandler Amaker (165) won by medical forfeit.
Blackburn's 4-1 win over Zander Phaturos came in sudden victory and it was his first of the season in a dual meet; it was also the first dual meet win for Gautreau, who posted a major decision; and Nugent's pin was his third of the season.
The loss to NIU ended a four-meet CMU win streak.
CMU freshman Archer Anderson, wrestling in just his third collegiate dual, upset senior Blake West, 14-8, to open the meet.
West, a senior, is the defending MAC champion at 125 and two-time NCAA Championships qualifier who is ranked 25th nationally by InterMat and 29th by FloWrestling.
Nugent posted an 8-0 major decision victory and Amaker scored a takedown with 20 seconds remaining to break a 1-1 tie before going on to post a 4-2 win.
Cochran fell into a 7-0 deficit early in his match before surging back for a 23-11 major decision victory. Cochran, who has won 11 of his last 13 bouts, tied his match, 7-7, with an escape to open the third period, and then scored five takedowns in the period to win by major decision, his seventh bonus-point victory of the season.
That win cut NIU's lead to 17-14 with one bout remaining.
At 285, NIU's Devon Dawson posted a 7-6 win over Caves, who is ranked 32nd nationally by InterMat. Dawson is ranked 22nd by both InterMat and FloWrestling.
