A third MAC outing with seven saves for Kershaw; Chippewas record back-to-back draws in league play

By: Harrison LaLone

MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. — Central Michigan Soccer recorded its first shutout of the season Sunday behind the strong presence of, and seven saves by, senior keeper Jadia Kershaw (Lewis Center, Ohio / Olentangy Orange).

The Chippewas were left to settle for a draw in back-to-back Mid-American Conference matches after 90 scoreless minutes with Miami (OH).

"We've had games where we've scored goals," Head Coach James DeCosemo said, "and now we have one where we didn't allow one. We have to be able to marry those two things together now."

Sunday marked the third time in five MAC contests that Kershaw hit her career mark of seven stops in conference matches. She collected all but one stop in the second half as the RedHawks kept their foot on the gas.

"[Miami] is physical. "They put the ball in the air, they put it in dangerous areas. You have to be able to withstand and we did that."

CMU Soccer heads back out on the road for Toledo Friday (Oct. 9, 7 p.m. ET) ahead of a pair at home: Akron (Oct. 15, 7 p.m. ET) and Western Michigan (Oct. 18, 1 p.m. ET).

Kershaw's biggest moment of the day came in the 88^th minute as she faced a free kick from just outside the 18'. A curling drive was placed just under the crossbar but the six-foot-one senior was able to punch it away, then the Chippewa defense stood firm on the ensuing corner.

"It gives you some confidence to play knowing that she's going to be able to grab crosses and make the saves that she makes."

While the offense did not find the perfect opportunity, there were still moments that created pressure at the other end of the pitch as CMU tallied four on-target attempts in the match.

"There were periods of the first half where we needed to put some chances away, create some momentum. I think we were all screaming out for somebody to step up with some quality, which maybe didn't happen, but that's hard to do when you're fighting as hard as we were throughout a game."
