Chippewas drop first of four matchups against the Big Ten, 103-36
COLUMBUS, Ohio — Central Michigan Women's Basketball fell to Ohio State in its first run-in of the season with a nationally ranked opponent Thursday night, 103-36.
The Buckeyes, ranked 18th by the Associated Press, 20th by the Women's Basketball Coaches Association, rushed out the gate with three straight from three-point range for a seven of 11 mark in the first quarter.
"Giving up three threes at the beginning of the game deflated us," Head Coach Kristin Haynie said.
Combined with heavy ball pressure against the CMU offense, Ohio State posted a tone-setting 34-8 lead at the end of the first.
"We couldn't get an offensive rhythm because their pressure was so intense. Our offense was affecting our defense. When our offense is stagnant, our effort on the defensive end needs to stay consistent."
Sophomore newcomer Jailenn Green (Lexington, Ky. / George Rogers Clark) collected seven of her team-high nine points in the first frame.
"When she stays out of foul trouble, she's great for us on the floor. She's a very talented player so, we can't afford to have her on the bench."
Fellow sophomore guard Lilah Turnbull (Pittsburgh, Pa. / Western Reserve) added eight for the contest.
The defense still showed through in spells as the Chippewas forced 21 Ohio State turnovers with 12 steals, four of which at the hand of Summer Davis (Detroit, Mich. / West Bloomfield).
The Chippewas return to McGuirk Arena Sunday to host Butler (Nov. 8, 1 p.m. ET on ESPN+), then fifth-ranked Michigan eight days later (Nov. 16, 8 p.m. ET on CBS Sports Network).
"I'm excited to be back at our arena in front of our crowd because we have some good games coming up and this game prepared us for that."
