CMU 133-pounder rewarded for 2-0 performance against Big Ten opponents

MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. – Central Michigan's Andrew Austin was named the Mid-American Conference West Division Wrestler of the Week on Tuesday.

Austin, a redshirt junior from Punta Gorda, Fla., posted two wins last week over Big Ten opponents, helping the Chippewas to a split of dual meets on the final weekend of the regular season.

Austin, who is unranked, opened the weekend with a 9-4 win over Michigan State's Caleb Weiand, who entered the dual ranked 32nd nationally by FloWrestling.

Austin closed the weekend with a 7-5 victory over Michigan's Gauge Botero, scoring a third-period takedown and earning a riding-time point to overcome a 5-3 deficit.

Austin's victory at Michigan State helped the Chippewas to a 19-15 victory, and his win against Michigan was one of two that CMU registered against the 13th-ranked Wolverines. Austin improved to 16-12 on the season with the two victories.
