Carmody and Hoffman lead the Chippewas in second straight outing, each log top-10 finishes
KALAMAZOO, Mich. – Central Michigan Cross Country previewed the Mid-American Conference Championship course at the George Dales Invite, hosted by Western Michigan Friday morning.
The women's race kicked things off with a 13-team field consisting of 146 runners. The men's race featured 10 teams and 145 runners.
The women took eighth, led by sophomore Kyah Hoffman, who posted a 10th-place finish at 21:29. Hoffman stayed steady between the 11th position through the first two kilometers but pushed up to lead the race at the 3k mark. Senior Maya Guikema crossed the line second for the Chippewas in 26th place at 22:07.5.
Junior transfer Nate Carmody led the men to their third-place finish with a ninth-place 25:04.5 finish. Fifth-year runner Blake Chipman followed Carmody closely, logging a 25:20.7, 12th-place finish. Miciah Smith rounded out the Chippewas top three, with a 17th-place 25:35.4 finish.
"The women got hit by a little bug so today was just about pushing hard when it gets hard. It wasn't the result we were hoping for, but it is also very early." Director of Track and Field/Cross Country Jenny Swieton said, "The men competed well. They took a step forward from Drenth. It was good to see the course and have our first shot at MAC distance races for both genders."
Saginaw Valley took the team win on the men's side with a 77-point total. MAC foe Akron took the women's side with a 37-point total and took three of the top five individual finishes.
Central Michigan Cross Country will return to action Friday, Oct. 2, for the Joe Piane Invite, hosted by Notre Dame in South Bend, Ind.
