Insurance and Financial Responsibility
The Central Michigan University Athletic department will hold and maintain a secondary insurance policy to support any and all injuries that occur in athletic related activities (i.e.- competitions, practices, workouts, conditioning, voluntary activities). A student-athlete's primary insurance will always be utilized first, and the athletic department's secondary policy will cover the remaining balance to ensure no cost to the student-athlete or family. If at any time, student-athletes or families receive medical bills for care of an athletic-related injury they should send those to the Sports Medicine Department's Insurance Coordinator to address. We strongly encourage student-athletes and families to have a primary insurance provider as any and all illnesses or injuries that do not occur outside of athletic participation, while it can be facilitated by the sports medicine department, it will be the financial responsibility of the student-athlete and family.
The Central Michigan University Sports Medicine department does bill student-athlete primary insurances for athletic training services provided in care of injuries and conditions to the student-athletes. This program is done in collaboration with appropriate medical documentation and the documentation of health care units of services provided in a program and partnership with Vivature using the NexTT Electronic Medical Record platform. The billing for services will not result in an out-of-pocket cost to the student-athlete or the family, however you may see insurance explanation of benefits (EOB) showing the utilization of insurance covered for these billed services. This program and process is equivalent to if care of an injury was being done at a private health clinic by an athletic trainer or physical therapist being overseen by a physician. The revenue of billable services goes back directly to the athletic department to support the student-athlete experience and needs.
