Former NFL defensive lineman Ian Scott joined coach Jim McElwain’s staff as the defensive line coach in June, 2021.
In Scott's first season in charge of the Chippewa defensive front, CMU led the Mid-American Conference and ranked fourth in the nation with 43 sacks as it finished 9-4 and closed the season with a victory in the Tony the Tiger Sun Bowl. Scott's unit played a critical role on a defense that ranked third in the MAC.
Scott mentored defensive end Troy Hairston II, who in 2021 had nine sacks among 17 tackles-for-loss. Hairston shared the MAC lead in TFL.
Scott served on the defensive staff at Central Florida from 2018-20. He was a defensive-line graduate assistant under McElwain at Florida in 2017. Scott was an assistant coach for two years at Daniel (S.C.) High School before joining McElwain’s staff in Gainsville.
Scott played three years as a defensive lineman at Florida, twice earning All-Southeastern Conference Second Team honors and helping the Gators to the 2000 SEC championship. He was named in 2001 to the SEC All-Academic team.
Scott played in the NFL with the Chicago Bears, Philadelphia Eagles, Carolina Panthers and San Diego Chargers from 2003-09. He played on four division championship teams, two with the Bears and two with the Chargers, and played in Super Bowl XLI with the Bears.
