Kevin Barbay is in his first season as CMU's offensive coordinator/quarterbacks coach after serving as the wide receivers coach for two seasons.
Â
In the abbreviated 2020 season, Barbay helped lead CMU to a 3-3 finish both overall and in the MAC as 10 Chippewas earned all-conference honors, including defensive end Troy Hairston II, who earned the co-MAC Defensive Player of the Year Award.
Â
In addition, running back Lew Nichols III was named the league Freshman of the Year, becoming the first Chippewa to be so honored since 2007.
Â
Hairston became the first Chippewa since 2005 to earn the league’s top individual award for a player on the defensive side of the ball.
Â
Joining Hairston on the All-MAC First Team were defensive lineman Mohamed Diallo, linebacker Troy Brown, defensive back Willie Reid, punter Luke Elzinga, and placekicker Marshall Meeder.
Â
One of Barbay’s protégés, wide receiver Kalil Pimpleton, earned Second Team All-Mid-American Conference honors as he continued to put on display his versatility and talent, finishing the season with 26 catches for 277 yards and two touchdowns, rushing 16 times for 134 yards and three touchdowns, and completing five of eight pass attempts for 149 yards and one touchdown.
Â
In 2019, Barbay led a wide-receiver unit that included Pimpleton and JaCorey Sullivan, who combined to make 139 receptions for 1,702 yards and nine touchdowns as the Chippewas won the Mid-American Conference West Division title and landed a berth in the New Mexico Bowl.
Â
Both Pimpleton and Sullivan were named First Team All-MAC. Pimpleton led the MAC in receptions and receiving yardage in 2019, and Sullivan was third in both catches and yardage. Another Chippewa receiver, Tyrone Scott, ranked fourth in the MAC in 2019 in yards per catch (17.6).
Â
Barbay’s troops played an integral role in a potent CMU offense that rolled up a MAC-best 6,070 total yards, including 3,531 through the air, the second-highest total in the MAC.
Barbay served under McElwain from 2015-17 at Florida as the Gators’ director of player development. In that role, Barbay performed daily evaluations, opponent scouting, practice scheduling and roster management.
Barbay helped the Gators to back-to-back Southeastern Conference East Division championships and appearances in the Buffalo Wild Wings and Outback bowls. He served during the 2018 season as the offensive coordinator/quarterbacks coach at Stephen F. Austin.
Barbay earned a bachelor of science degree with a major in exercise science and fitness management from Lamar in 2005 and his master of science in education-sport management from Baylor in 2007.
