Tom Mason joined coach Jim McElwain’s Central Michigan coaching staff prior to the 2022 season. He serves as the program’s assistant head coach/linebackers coach.

A veteran of more than 40 years in the coaching business, Mason’s impressive resumé includes stops on the professional, Football Championship Subdivision and Football Bowl Subdivision levels.

Among the number of schools that Mason has coached on the Football Bowl Subdivision level are UTEP, Hawaii, SMU, Fresno State and Nevada. He has twice served as an interim head coach, once at SMU and once at Boise State. He has coached in the XFL, the Canadian Football League and in NFL Europe.

Mason played linebacker at Nevada from 1976-77 and received his bachelor’s degree in physical education and a Master of Science degree in physical education and post-secondary education from Eastern Washington, where he served as an assistant from 1981-85.

Mason and his wife, Jami, have a daughter, Brenna.
