Dr. AJ Pinney, D.O. serves as Central Michigan Athletics' Team Physician. He began his current role with CMU Athletics in May 2022.
Pinney works as a family medicine physician with specialized fellowship training in non-surgical sports medicine with MyMichigan Health in Midland, Mich. He provides both non-surgical musculoskeletal care and sports injury evaluation and treatment through MyMichigan Health’s WellSport Program.
He is skilled in diagnostic Point-of-Care Ultrasound, US guided injections, concussion management, PRP injections, Tenex percutaneous tenotomy surgery (plantar fasciitis/epicondylitis/tendinopathies), carpal tunnel hydrodissection, frozen shoulder hydrodilation, occipital nerve blocks, Iovera geniculate nerve cryoneurolysis, acute sports sideline management, Covid 19 management in athletes, chronic exertional compartment syndrome, orthotics, visual gait analysis, pediatric sports injuries, Advanced Trauma Life Support, SafeSport certified, Olympic coverage experience, Global Health work in Kenya, Clinical research, and Osteopathic manipulation.
Prior to his current role with MyMichigan Health, he served a Family Medical Residency at the Munson Medical Center in Traverse City with Michigan State University from 2016-19 and went on to work a sports medicine fellowship at Cone Health for one year. He also worked four summers as a college intern in the departments of: Patient Transport, Critical Care, Oncology, and Gamma Knife.
Pinney graduated from the University of Michigan with a bachelor's degree in Cell/Cellular and Molecular Biology in 2012. He earned a Doctor of Osteopathy Medicine from the Kirksville College of Oestopathic Medicine in 2016.
A Midland, Mich. native who attended H.H. Dow High School, Pinney enjoys hiking with his fiancé and two German Shorthaired Pointers. He also enjoys traveling to exotic places, boating in Northern Michigan, and cooking like a Masterchef.
