Northern Michigan native and former Ferris State assistant Jimmy Booth enters his second year as Central Michigan’s Director of Men’s Basketball Operations on Andy Bronkema’s staff.
“Coach Booth is another coach with successful head coaching experience,” Bronkema said. “He was with us at Ferris State for the last three years and is an expert on the system and culture we are familiar with. His administrative background at Muskegon Community College also adds an important skill set to the office and department. His junior college connections and Michigan roots will provide immediate inroads for us, and his relationship-building skills and personality will continue to provide more.”
“Our relationship goes back to our playing days when we competed against each other in college. And our coaching circle and ties are inner woven in so many ways, including coaching with my brother Luke and with former Bulldog assistant Dave Schlump.”
“I want to thank Coach Bronkema for the incredible opportunity to join his staff here at Central Michigan,” Booth said. “I am excited to join the Mount Pleasant and CMU communities and am looking forward to doing what it takes to bring championships to CMU. Fire Up Chips!”
Booth served the previous three seasons (2022-25) on Bronkema’s Ferris State coaching staff in multiple roles. He started as a Basketball Analyst, then transitioned to advance and internal scout, before taking on assistant coach and offensive coordinator duties. Booth filled the vacancy left by the retirement of former assistant coach Dave Schlump, who had been his high school coach and previously held the top post at Muskegon CC before joining the Jayhawks.
As the 2020 Basketball Coaches Association of Michigan (BCAM) Junior College Coach of the Year, Booth guided Muskegon Community College to impressive 81 wins over five seasons, securing four championships and a runner-up finish. Muskegon C.C. clinched the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Region 12 title in both 2020 and 2022 and finished second in 2021. Under Booth's leadership, the team captured the MCCAA Western Conference and state title in 2020.
At Muskegon C.C, Booth coached two NJCAA All-Americans, two MCCAA Western Conference Defensive Player of the Year winners, one MCCAA Western Conference Player of the Year, and one Freshman of the Year recipient.
Booth was named the 2020 BCAM JUCO Coach of the Year, Western Conference Coach of the Year in both 2020 and 2022, MCCAA Coach of the Year honor in 2022, and is a two-time NJCAA Region 12 Coach of the Year and Region 12 District A Coach of the Year.
Under Booth, Muskegon ended a 74-year drought by winning the 2019-20 MCCAA State Championship, its first since World War II. The team broke a 30-year drought, reaching the NJCAA Tournament Sweet Sixteen for the first time since 1989-90. Each season, Booth’s players advanced to four-year schools nationwide.
Booth launched his basketball coaching career as an assistant coach at his alma mater, Cedar Springs High School, from 2009 to 2012.
A Cedar Springs, Mich. native, Booth played for Schlump in high school and later assisted him at Muskegon CC from 2012-16, before taking over the program when Schlump returned to Ferris State. Booth played four years of college basketball—one at Muskegon C.C., and three at Grace Christian, where he helped in the 2006 NCCAA National Championship.
Booth earned a bachelor's in religious education from Grace Christian and holds a bachelor’s in business management from Davenport University, both in 2009. He received his master's degree in sports administration from Wayne State University in 2019.
