Jake Riedel begins his first year on head coach Matt Drinkall’s Central Michigan football coaching staff as its Director of Strength and Conditioning for Football. Riedel worked with Drinkall for the past three seasons at Army West Point. Riedel brings with him experience of winning a conference championship at every school he has coached at and most notably a national championship at LSU in 2019.
An 11-year strength and conditioning coach, Riedel recently completed three seasons as a strength and conditioning coach with the Army West Point football program, serving as an Assistant Strength Coach (2022). He was promoted to Associate Head Strength Coach in 2023, a position he held for the remainder of his time at Army West Point. In 2024, he was a vital part of Army’s first-ever conference championship and 12-win season, the most wins in a single season in Army history.
During his three years at Army West Point, he was responsible for programming for the skill and mid-skill groups. He also utilized GPS data to enhance the team’s training during both in-season and off-season strength and conditioning. Seventy-five percent of the Army team increased its speed by more than 10 percent. Out of the 48 players that wore GPS units in 2024, 28 had a maximum velocity of greater than 20 miles per hour, and a team-high eight players hit in-game speeds of over 20 miles per hour.
Riedel arrived at Army after spending seven combined seasons at LSU, where he held the title of Senior Associate Director of Strength and Conditioning for one season (2021) and Assistant Strength and Conditioning Coach (2015-20). He played a key role as part of LSU’s SEC Championship and National Championship season in 2019. During the 2021 season, he served as the Director of Strength and Conditioning. While at LSU, he designed a strength program to train the defensive line and linebackers. He was also responsible for GPS reporting to the coaching staff and for writing all aspects of the speed and conditioning program, and FRC/mobility program.
Before LSU, Riedel spent time at the University of Cincinnati as an Assistant Strength and Conditioning Coach (2014) and Graduate Assistant (2013). He helped the Bearcats win an American Athletic Conference championship in 2014.
Combining all three stops in his career, Riedel has the unique distinction of winning either a conference title and/or national championship at each of the three schools. During his career, Riedel’s teams have advanced to 10 bowl games, two conference championship games, along with the national FBS semifinal and championship game.
A South Milwaukee, Wis. native, Riedel earned both his bachelor’s degree (2011) and master’s degree (2012) in Health and Human Performance and Recreation with a minor in Coaching from the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater.
He and his wife Megan have three children: Lilly, Luke, and Jaxon.
