John was the first Chippewa ever to reach the NCAA Division I finals, falling in the championship match at 118 pounds in 1981 ... won MAC titles in 1979 and '81, and was captain and MVP of the '81 squad ... won 19 straight matches in '81 and posted a career mark of 93-25-4, still eighth best in CMU history ... was 37-6 in 1981 (sixth most wins in a season) and his 26 career pins is tied for fourth ... was a two-time national AAU Greco-Roman champion who was a member of a touring USA team to Egypt, Hungary and France ... won the world championship for wrestlers 35 and older in 1993 and has been an assistant at Clemson, Michigan and Pittsburgh ... he is now the head wrestling coach at Duquesne University.
