MOUNT PLEASANT -- The Central Michigan University men's basketball team (5-14 overall, 2-8 Mid-American Conference) posted its second conference win of the season with a 75-65 victory over Northern Illinois University (11-9 overall, 5-6 Mid-American Conference) on Monday night in Rose Arena.
The win snapped CMU's four-game losing streak and was the Chippewas first conference victory since an 88-72 win over Western Michigan on Jan. 15.
Northern Illinois opened the game with a 2-0 lead on a pair of Rey Jones free throws but Tim Kisner hit a three-pointer to give the Chippewas a 5-2 lead they would never relinquish. CMU built its lead to as many as 12 points (23-11) before going into the break with a 40-34 advantage.
The Chippewas built their lead to double digits three different times in the second half before NIU went on a 9-0 run to cut the lead to 59-57 with 7:40 to play. It would be as close as the Huskies would get the rest of the way. David Webber made six free throws and a layup in the last three minutes of play to help the Chippewas secure the victory.
Tim Kisner led the Chippewas with 16 points and four assists. Willie Wallace and David Webber each added 15 points while Chad Pleiness added 14. Dan Schell had a team-best nine rebounds.
NIU was led by T.J. Lux who had 16 points and 11 rebounds. Mike Brown had 13 points, Leon Rodgers 11 and Rey Jones added 10.
The Chippewas travel to Akron on Feb. 2 at 7:30 p.m., and host Kent on Feb. 5 at 3:30 p.m.
