McAfee is in his second season on head coach Andy Bronkema’s Central Michigan coaching staff.
MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich.—Central Michigan's Raymoan McAfee has been promoted to the men's basketball program's Associate Head Coach position, coach Andy Bronkema announced Thursday morning.
"Coach McAfee has proven himself in every step of his coaching career," Bronkema said. "His experience and growth put him on par with any assistant coach in the nation. He does things the right way and puts people first, making it an easy promotion from within."
Detroit native McAfee, a former Ferris State assistant and player, is in his second year on Andy Bronkema's Central Michigan men's basketball staff. He joined the Chippewas in April 2025 after three seasons as an assistant coach at Wayne State (2022-25) under head coach Bryan Smothers, helping the Warriors achieve a 37-46 overall record with 14 total Academic All-GLIAC honorees. In 2024-25, Wayne State registered its first winning season since 2017-18, finishing 15-14 overall and 11-9 in the GLIAC.
Prior to his joining Wayne State, McAfee spent four years on the Ferris State coaching staff under Bronkema. He played at Ferris State from 2012-14, joined the coaching staff for three years, and returned in 2018 as the top assistant. In October 2021, he was promoted to associate head coach. His responsibilities included all facets of the program: day-to-day operations, recruiting, skill development, on-floor coaching, video, analytics, and more.
During his two tenures at Ferris State, his coaching helped the Bulldogs win three consecutive GLIAC Tournament titles in 2015, 2016, and 2017, along with GLIAC regular-season titles in 2016-17 and 2019-20. These accomplishments established the program as one of the conference's elite under his guidance.
McAfee began his coaching career as the top assistant at Indiana Tech under first-year head coach Ted Albert in 2017-18. In his lone season at Indiana Tech, he helped guide the Warriors to a 27-7 overall record, a 17-3 conference record, and a trip to the second round of the NAIA Division II Men's Basketball Tournament. Notably, the Warriors finished as the WHAC runner-up and achieved their highest-ever ranking at No. 3 in the NAIA Division II Coaches' Top-25 poll.
A prep standout at Detroit Pershing High School under head coach A.W. Canada, McAfee was a member of the school's 2009 Michigan High School Athletic Association state championship team and played a key role as part of a group that claimed back-to-back city championships in 2009 and 2010. In the 2010 city championship game, McAfee posted a triple-double versus Cody. In Pershing's 90-73 state title win over Kalamazoo Central in 2009, McAfee contributed five points, four rebounds, and two blocks.
He began his collegiate career at Bethune-Cookman, where he played in 49 games over two seasons. He transferred to Ferris State in 2012, where he became a regular in the Bulldog lineup. In his two seasons with the Bulldogs, McAfee saw action in 45 games and totaled 53 blocked shots. His 37 rejections as a senior ranked third in the GLIAC.
McAfee graduated from Ferris State in 2014 with a bachelor's degree in Applied Speech Communication and earned his master's degree in Educational Leadership in 2022. He was also a member of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc.
McAfee resides in Mount Pleasant with his wife, Domonique and son, Rayden.
