Men's Basketball Announces Two New Coaching Staff Members, Promotions

Head Coach Andy Bronkema adds assistant coach Lance Roark and assistant director of operations & player development Dorian Aluyi to the Central Michigan men’s basketball staff, announces several other promotions.
MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich.—Central Michigan Head Men's Basketball Coach Andy Bronkema officially announced the addition of two new staff members on Tuesday. Lance Roark has been hired as an Assistant Coach; Dorian Aluyi is CMU's new Assistant Director of Operations & Player Development; Cody Torpey (Video Coordinator) and Kyle Cousino (Operations Coordinator) both earned promotions to their respective positions; and Associate Athletic Trainer Jeffrey Freiberg has joined the staff.
Roark and Aluyi both have worked with or played for Bronkema in the past. Roark served on the staff that coached Bronkema at Cornerstone. Aluyi played for Bronkema at Ferris State.
A Detroit native, Roark joins Bronkema's staff with over 26 years of combined college coaching experience. More information about Roark is available at this link.
"Lance coached me at Cornerstone and was one of the most influential coaches in my life," Bronkema said. "He will bring a presence to the team and staff that will unite everyone. Beyond his basketball expertise, he is a connector, communicator, and motivator. We have been talking about coaching together for years, and I'm excited that it is finally working out."
Roark coached at Cornerstone University in Grand Rapids, Mich., from 1994 to 2011. He was part of five NAIA Final Four teams and two NAIA national championship teams in both 1999 and 2011. His duties included recruiting, player development, practice planning, on-court instruction, and mentoring student athletes. Roark recruited the core of Kim Elders' first national championship team the year after he finished his playing career, including Mike Long, who earned 1999 NAIA Tournament Player of the Year honors. He capped his time at CU with another national championship team in 2011, with another group he helped recruit, most notably Caleb Simons, who was the NAIA national tournament most outstanding player that season.
His previous head coaching position was at Sparta High School in Sparta, Mich., where he taught English and physical education from 1995-2026. Competing in the rugged OK-Blue Conference, Roark's teams consistently outperformed expectations, sending 10 student-athletes to college athletic programs between 2015 and 2020. He was nominated twice for the BCAM coach of the year award during his tenure.
Both of his daughters, Alex and Avery, graduated from Central Michigan.
A Chicago area native, Aluyi joins the Central Michigan coaching staff after serving the last two years as a graduate assistant coach at both Arkansas (2025-26) and Florida State (2024-25) under Hall of Fame coaches John Calipari and Leonard Hamilton, respectively. "Dorian was an all-time great player for me at Ferris State," Bronkema said. "His love for the game is extremely high, and since graduation, he has developed his resume in an impressive way. His value to our staff as a former player in the system and a former professional player will resonate with all the players. I can remember conversations with him as a player discussing a future in coaching, and I am glad we are back together."
Aluyi began his coaching career with the Roosevelt University (Ill.) men's basketball program during the 2023–24 season. Before entering coaching, Aluyi was a standout player at Ferris State under Bronkema, where he earned two all-conference honors. As a senior, he averaged 12.4 points and 7.8 rebounds per game while shooting 41 percent from 3-point range, and finished his career as a 1,000-point scorer. Following his college career, Aluyi played professionally in Spain during the 2022–23 season with ACB Sagrado Corazón (Liga EBA), where he averaged 18 points and 10 rebounds per game and earned Eurobasket Player of the Week honors.
Torpey was promoted from CMU's Men's Basketball Assistant Video Coordinator to Video Coordinator.
"Cody joined our staff late last year after a brief stint at High Point," Bronkema said. "His diligence in the video room was a huge asset to the program, and we are happy to promote him to Video Coordinator."
Cousino was the team manager in his senior year, then graduate manager the following year, and then promoted to graduate assistant before accepting his new role as operations coordinator this season.
"Kyle stayed on at CMU staff as a grad assistant last year, which was very helpful as we transitioned," Bronkema said. "His work in operations has made everyone's job easier, and we are excited for him to come back next year as we promote him to Operations Coordinator."
Freiberg joins the staff as an Associate Athletic Trainer after working the 2025-26 season as Troy's men's basketball trainer.
"Jeff came highly recommended as an Athletic Trainer and emerged as a leading candidate early in the process," Bronkema said. "Wes and his department have done an outstanding job of bringing in great fits for the coaches and Central Michigan, and Jeff is just another one of their great hires."
