Chippewa Field Hockey Update

The Team--The Central Michigan University field hockey team (4-13, 4-6 Mid-American Conference) plays in the Mid-American Conference (MAC) championships hosted by Ball State University on Nov. 4-6. CMU, the fourth seed, takes on fifth-seed Miami on Nov. 4 at noon. If the Chippewas win, they would take on Ball Sate in the second round on Nov. 5 at noon. The title game is slated for Nov. 6 at noon.
The Coach--Cristy Freese is in her 14th season leading the Chippewa field hockey team. Freese, who MAC Coach of the Year honors in 1987 and 1989, led the Chippewas to a third-place finish in the MAC in 1998. Freese led CMU to its first MAC title in 1990 and her teams have been in the MAC title game four times and the semifinals three other times. She has a 100-152-6 record with the Chippewas.
Freese On The MAC Tourney-- "It is hard to beat a team three times in a season especially playing them only five days apart. We have played two close games with Miami this season. It will be a battle."
Freese On Last Weekend--"We were extremely happy to get two wins and finish fourth in the MAC. We played great defense especially against Miami on Saturday. Crystal Smith did an excellent job as well as Janel Spero in goal."
Last Weekend--The Chippewas closed out the regular season with a pair of wins. CMU defeated Louisville (4-1) on Oct. 29 and Miami (1-0) on Oct. 30.
Central picked up its third win on the year with a 4-1 triumph over Louisville on Oct. 29. After a scoreless first half, Louisville took a 1-0 lead on a goal from Katie Deskins with 27:25 left in the game. The Chippewas then stormed back with four unanswered goals to claim the win. CMU's Kasey Hall (Red Bank, NJ/Sr.) tied the score at 1-1 while Cheryl Eglin (Wading River, NY/Sr.) scored the go-ahead goal with 16:05 to go. Melissa Lazarevski (Rochester, NY/So.) and Eglin scored the Chippewas' final two scores. Goalie Janel Spero (Shoreham, NY/Fr.) made six saves and gave up one goal. CMU outshot the Cardinals, 19-6.
The Chippewas closed the regular season with a 1-0 win over Miami on Oct. 30. After a defensive battle for most of the game, Eglin scored the lone goal of the game with just 5:53 to go in the game. Jeanette Spero (Shoreham, NY/Fr.) and April Hammer (Lancaster, NY/Jr.) each added assists on the goal. Janel Spero posted her first career shutout. She made seven saves on the afternoon.
Eglin Closes In-- Cheryl Eglin scored two goals and an assist last weekend to move within one point of tying CMU's career scoring record. Eglin has 97 career points (38 goals and 21 assists) while Donna Provenzola (1973-76) is tops on the list with 98 points. She is third on the career goals list (38) and sixth in assists (21).
100-- Head coach Cristy Freese recorded her 100th win at CMU with the Chippewas' 1-0 shutout of Miami on Oct. 30. Freese, who is in her 14th year at CMU, has a 100-152-6 record with the Chippewas. Her career record stands at 107-159-7.
Lending A Hand-- April Hammer is tied for fourth on the Chippewas' career assist list with 22. Tracey Lefever (1995-98) and Kari Labeta (1995-98) are tied for first with 27 assists.
Notes-- Melissa Lazarevski is tops on the squad with 17 points (six goals and five assists) ... Cheryl Eglin was named the Offensive Player of the Week and Crystal Smith (Lancaster, NY/Sr.) the Defensive Player of the Week by the coaching staff.
