MOUNT PLEASANT -
The Central Michigan University men's basketball team will play its second and final exhibition of the preseason against Brazil Select on Monday, Nov. 15, in Rose Arena.
Tipoff is set for 7 p.m.
The Chippewas claimed a 103-96 overtime win on Wednesday night in their first exhibition contest with the McLaughlin All-Stars.
Central played 14 men, 12 of them for at least 14 minutes.
"We played a lot of guys and subbed in groups of five," said head coach Jay Smith. "It's not good for trying to get into a flow. But, we got a look at a lot of people and got some things accomplished."
Freshman guard J.R. Wallace (Muskegon/Reeths-Puffer) had an impressive debut with 21 points while senior forward Jason Webber (Farmington Hills/Country Day) added 19, junior Tim Kisner (Hopkins) 12, senior Dan Schell (Mount Pleasant) 11 and redshirt freshman Chad Pleiness (Scottville/Mason County Central) 10.
"We were excited just to play somebody other than ourselves," Smith said. "J. R. Wallace and Jason Webber played well."
The Chippewas played without a trio of veterans including sophomores Mike Manciel (Detroit/Country Day) and David Webber (Farmington Hills/Country Day) and senior Rudy Gaytan (Lansing/Catholic Central). Manciel, the 1998-99 Mid-American Conference (MAC) "Freshman of the Year," is recovering from bone-spur surgery while Webber has an ankle sprain and Gaytan a viral infection.
Smith anticipates Webber will be ready for the Brazil contest. Gaytan is questionable while Manciel could be out for a couple of more weeks.
"We'll mix and match a number of different lineups again for the Brazil game," Smith said. "I'm more concerned with our team right now than I am with Brazil."
Central opens the regular season with a pair of home games on Saturday, Nov. 20, against Wisconsin-Milwaukee and Tuesday, Nov. 23, against Wright State. Both games begin at 7 p.m.
