MAC Champion NIU Defeats Volleyball In Four Games

MOUNT PLEASANT -- A hot-hitting Northern Illinois squad handed the Central Michigan University volleyball team a 3-1 loss on Friday night in Mount Pleasant.
NIU took games one and two by scores of 30-20 and 30-20. Central bounced back to take the third set, 30-23, before the Huskies ended the match with a convincing 30-13 win in game four.
The Huskies captured the MAC regular season title by improving to 21-4 overall and 15-2 in the MAC. Ball State lost to Western Michigan on Friday, putting the Cardinals two games back with one game remaining. CMU falls to 6-19 overall and 1-16 in the MAC.
The Huskies hit a whopping .424 from the floor with 75 kills and only 16 errors in 139 attempts. NIU was led by Sara Lein who tallied 13 kills in 15 attempts for a .867 hitting percentage. Rena Widboom and Tera Lobdell each recorded 17 kills while Lobdell added 11 digs.
Emily Lovejoy was the lone bright spot for CMU. She notched 13 kills and four digs. Kendra DeVries and Leslie Schroeder each tallied seven kills while DeVries also had four blocks.
Kristin Tack had five kills and four blocks. Setter Shaleene Glombowski recorded 31 kills and nine digs.
CMU hit .120 in the match with a -.094 mark in game four. Northern had 75 kills to CMU's 41.
It was CMU's fifth straight loss.
The Chippewas close the season on Saturday at home against Ball State, the MAC's No. 2 team. First serve in Rose Arena is set for 7 p.m.
