Boise, Idaho -- Central Michigan held a 10-7 lead in the second quarter but 16 unanswered points by Boise State led to a 26-10 BSU win as the Chippewas ended their season with a road loss.
Central Michigan closes the 2001 campaign with a 3-7 overall record, a 2-6 MAC record and a 1-4 divisional record. BSU improved to 8-4 on the season. The game was rescheduled from Sept. 15 when it was cancelled because of the national tragedies.
CMU had offensive troubles in the game, gaining only 147 yards of total offense compared to the Broncos' 468. The Chippewas had 74 yards rushing and another 72 passing.
Paul Savich put Central on the board first with a 42-yard field goal on the Chippewas' first possession.
Boise State had the ball first, though, taking its opening possession down to the Chippewa 12-yard line before Jovan Clarke came up with an interception and returned it 60 yards into Bronco territory. Six plays later Savich split the uprights with what would be the final field goal of his career.
The Broncos manufactured a 14-play, 75-yard drive early in the second quarter that ended with a three-yard TD run by Brock Forsey to give BSU a 7-3 lead.
Central was forced to punt on its next possession but the kick was fumbled by Tim Gilligan and Derrick Holoman recovered it at the Boise State 44-yard line.
CMU took advantage of the miscue and drove into the end zone to give CMU the lead. The Chippewas' 10-play drive was capped by Terrence Jackson finding pay dirt from two-yards out.
Following CMU's score, Boise State mounted a marathon 17-play drive that ate up most of the clock, leaving only 36 seconds left in the half following a Nick Calaycay 32-yard field goal that gave BSU a 13-10 halftime lead.
Neither team did much in the third quarter until the Broncos' Calaycay connected on a 27-yard field goal to extend BSU's lead.
Following a Chippewa fumble, Boise State got great field position early in the fourth quarter and on a fourth-and-goal play from the five, Bronco QB B.J. Rhode hit Jay Swillie for a TD pass, taking the wind out of CMU's sails.
Forsey would seal the Boise State win with a three yard TD run with just under two minutes remaining in the game.
Terrence Jackson rushed 25 times for 80 yards and one TD, ending his streak of seven straight 100-yard games.
Derek Gorney got the start at QB and he played the entire game completing 10-of-25 passes for 73 yards. He was intercepted twice and sacked twice.
Rob Turner had four grabs for 31 yards.
Forsey rushed 32 times for 212 yards and two TDs for BSU. B.J. Rhode hit on 13-of-27 passes for 191 yards and one score.
Billy Wingfield had five catches for 62 yards to lead the Bronco receiving corp.
Clarke had a busy day on the CMU defensive unit. He posted 21 tackles, including three for losses of 10 yards and he had the interception he returned 60 yards.
James King tallied 11 tackles and he blocked an extra point attempt in the fourth quarter.
