FAIRFAX, Va. - For the second straight road game, a poor second half doomed the Central Michigan University Chippewas.
George Mason led by two at the half but a 13-1 run early in the second gave the Patriots the spark they needed to pull ahead for a 65-54 win.
The victory was the Patriots' fourth straight and improved their record to 5-1. CMU drops to 3-3 on the season, 0-3 on the road.
Chris Kaman and Chad Pleiness combined to score CMU's first 16 points of the second half while trying to keep the Chippewas in the game. Kaman finished with 16 points, nine rebounds and five blocked shots. Pleiness had 14 points and six rebounds.
Central Michigan shot just 33 percent in the second half, including 10 percent from three-point range, while committing seven turnovers.
A pair of Lamar Butler three-pointers and a dunk by Jon Larranaga gave GMU a 14 point lead with 3:10 remaining.
David Webber struggled in the game going 3-for-17 from the floor and 1-for-6 from three-point range. He finished with nine points.
Redshirt freshman Tony Bowne had a solid game off the bench with career highs of four points, seven rebounds, three assists and a steal with no turnovers in 20 minutes of play.
Rob Anderson scored a game-high 15 points to lead George Mason. Three others were in double figures, including Butler off the bench with 13.
Central held a 40-35 edge in rebounding but committed 20 turnovers to GMU's 11.
The Chippewas face another road test on Sunday when they travel to Illinois State. ISU was the only team to beat the Chippewas in Rose Arena last season.
