Baseball Blasts Long Island

WINTER PARK, Fla.--Central Michigan got back on the winning track with a 15-9 victory over Long Island on on Tuesday afternoon at Alfond Stadium.
Long Island dominated early, scoring nine unanswered runs. LIU scored two in the first, one in the fourth, four in the fifth and two in the sixth inning.
The Chippewas got on the scoreboard in a big way with seven runs in the seventh inning. With the bases loaded, Tim Groves walked to score a run, Dan Griesbaum had an RBI single, Bryan Scheurer walked to drive in a run, Jason Helps had a triple that scored three and Mike Gates rounded out the scoring with an RBI double.
Central added single runs in the eighth and ninth innings to tie the score at 9-9. Groves had an RBI single in the eighth and Helps belted a home run in the ninth to tie score.
CMU held Long Island off the scoreboard in the bottom of the ninth to force extra innings.
The Chippewas took a commanding 15-9 lead with six runs in the top of the 10th inning.
Brad Reid led the inning off with a home run and the other big blow was a three RBI double by Helps.
Helps had a big day for CMU, hitting 4-for-6 with a double, a triple and a home run.
Dan Horvath picked up the win to even his record at 1-1. He pitched the final two innings and held Long Island hitless.
CMU takes on Central Florida on Tuesday night at 7 p.m.
